Buying souvenirs or gifts to send to your family back home can be tough - Brasilia is really a government city, not a tourist city. But there are options if you know where to look. 1. TV Tower Address: Feira de Artesanato da Torre de TV SDC, Eixo Monumental, Brasília - DF, 70070-350 Image by Daderot from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brasilia_TV_Tower, used under the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication. Down the hill from the TV is the TV Tower Market. There are many little shops selling all the typical tourist tchotchkes, such as keychains, pencils, t-shirts, etc. Keep an eye out for the handwoven baskets - those are made from a grass that is native to the cerrado (Brazilian high plain). 2. Fundacao Athos Bulcao Address: Asa Sul Comércio Local Sul 404 Loja 1 - Asa Sul, Brasília - DF, 70297-400 Website: https://www.fundathos.org.br/athos-bulcao While you're walking around the city parks or at the major city historical sites (such as the churches) you may notice a distinctive blue tile pattern. All those tiles were designed by Athos Bulcao, an artist from Rio who was commissioned to design these tiles for Brasilia. The Foundation's shop has not only some of the tiles themselves, but also mugs and other gifts featuring his distinctive patterns. The mesmerizing repetition of the Athos Bulcao tiles at Igrejinha Nossa Senhora De Fatima Church. Photo by Heather Torrance. 3. Verdurao t-shirt shop at Infinu art collective CRS 506 bloco A loja 67 - just off the W3 https://www.infinu.com.br/ https://verduraocamisetas.com.br/ Photo by Heather Torrance. Verdurao has Brasilia-themed t-shirts with cheeky sayings and drawings, such as the iconic "I Heart NYC"-style shirt, only with a pink ipê tree in place of the heart. It's on the street side of Infinu, an art collective selling high-end craft and home decorative items. There's also a nice little coffee shop and a gelato place, and a tattoo parlor inside. 4. Endossa Collaborative Store Endossa currently has two locations in Brasilia, one in Asa Norte and one in Asa Sul. The items they carry vary depending on which artist or producer is renting the booths at the moment, but all of the products are high-quality and unique. https://endossa.com/ SCLN 310 Bloco C Lojas 14-20 SCLS 306 Bloco A Loja 30 Please leave other suggestions you may have found in the comments!

I know brasilienses are very proud of their city, but for me the architecture is kind of boxy and boring, and all the neighborhoods look so similar that I have a hard time remembering where things are or navigating the city. But the bright side of this is that there are a lot of big, blank surfaces for graffiti artists to express themselves. Mural by BREUBS at 410N Brasilia has a very active graffiti arts scene. And the surprising thing to me is that it is professional! Yes, the grafiteiros here are actually commissioned for their art. Which means instead of being painted over or disrespected and ruined by other people, the big beautiful murals often stay around for years and are taken care of by others. Omik/Toys mural at CLS 112 Some of the graffiti is visible from the streets as you drive past, but the best way to enjoy the graffiti here is just to go for a walk or a jog through the neighborhoods. You rarely see graffiti on the sides of residential buildings, but often the neighborhood associations commission painting for the sides of the community quadra building, or the four walls of the utility buildings in the center of each quadra. You'll be able to see those best from the green spaces in the center of the quadras. Brixx Furtado and Siren, 210N Many of the grafiteiros here in Brasilia have Instagram accounts, where you can view their work, and sometimes even contact them to order commissioned pieces to hang in your house or have them do a mural! Here are the Instagrams of some of the more famous artists. I just want to throw out my three favorite places to jog. If you have other ideas, please add them! Parque da Cidade. I like the trails here because they're nowhere near roads - I can run without having to stop for cars, and I don't have to worry about getting hit by a bicycle. Also, we can make a family outing out of it. While I'm running, my husband can be watching my son playing on the playground. Eixao do Lazer. On Sundays, the Eixao is closed to traffic. Sometimes we ride bikes, and sometimes we just jog. Often we stop at one of the bouncy castles for our son to play for a while, or we get Dunkin' Donuts and a coffee afterward. Parque Olhos d'Agua. Like Parque da Cidade, Olhos d'Agua is a great because there are no bikes or traffic to worry about there in the park, there are playgrounds for the kids, and it's very clean (no pets allowed inside). After your run you can grab a coconut water from the front gate to replenish your electrolytes, or stop by La Boutique (the French bakery) and undo all of your good work by eating croissants.

We have been taking our two cats to Casa do Gato for their vaccinations the entire time we've been in Brasilia. We really appreciate the caring attitude of the doctors and staff. Umami is owned by a husband-and-wife team who make homestyle Japanese meals. THEY DON'T MAKE SUSHI - DON'T ASK (caps mine, not theirs). This is where you get hot dishes such as tonkatsu, fried chicken, gyoza or Japanese curry in a casual atmosphere. The tables are plastic and the food comes out on a plastic plate, but it's delicious and satisfying. It's the perfect stop before or after doing your grocery shopping at Mikami (which is just down the street). They also do delivery through iFood, for those days when you just can't make yourself cook. I highly recommend the karaague curry bento (fried chicken, white rice, curried vegetables, and a little salad). In Specialty Food Stores
There are several BioMundo locations throughout the city. If you're looking for bulk foods such as nuts, dried fruits, etc., or items for a special diet, this place is perfect. Generally each of their locations has the following: Bulk items: nuts, dried fruits, spices, including some unusual fruits (for Brazil) like dehydrated apples Keto/low carb: bulk coconut flour, bulk psyllium husk, packaged almond flour, packaged xylitol Bodybuilding: protein powders, whey powder Diabetic: packaged sugar-free snacks Vitamins and supplements The staff is very helpful, but please note that they prefer to package the bulk items for you, rather than customers helping themselves. The location at 110/111 North has a nice cafe where you can order a smoothie or a healthy lunch, or get pre-packaged salads and lunch items to go. http://www.biomundo.com.br/

Most salons here that do pedicures just do the toenails (cuticles, filing, buffing) and polish, so if you want someone to take off your calluses, this is the place to go! Ask for the tratamento tradicional - your feet will be beautiful and nice and soft, and then you can go to a traditional salon afterwards to get your polish done. They do several other types of treatments as well - reflexology, paraffin, etc. They have several locations in Brasilia, mostly in shopping malls: https://doctorfeet.com.br/uf/df/

We initially started getting our hair cut at Dom Brito's just for convenience's sake, because he's located on our block, but we kept going back because he was so friendly and welcoming, and does such a good job. The shop is located on the basement level of the building. Dom Brito and his wife cut men's, women's and children's hair, and additionally he can shape eyebrows, do highlights, etc. One of the things I love about going there is that my hair looks great, but he doesn't take eight hours for highlights like a lot of other ladies' salons do! It's done in an hour and a half or two hours at most, just like in the States. WhatsApp him to make an appointment. CLN 209 Bloco C Loja 53 (sub-solo) (61) 3548-9435 (61) 98329-7113

In Bakeries
I've ordered my son's birthday cakes through Maria de Fatima twice now and I have been very pleased with the quality of cakes and the level of service both times. She will make a custom cake with any theme that you want - you can send a picture of one you'd like to copy, or a sketch, or even just some photos and ideas and she'll put together an idea for you. For us this was really great because my son chose a couple of non-standard themes (ninja cats one year and cactuses the next year - I've put some pictures below), but she can also do the normal superhero or Disney characters. You can choose from traditional Brazilian cakes with all the nuts and fillings, or do a simpler American-style cake with just cake and frosting. Pre-pandemic you could visit the shop and sit down with an associate to discuss all the options; now they are doing it all on WhatsApp, but the result is just as good. You can also visit the shop just to have a cup of coffee and a pastry if you're in the neighborhood. She also makes a few dozen(!) varieties of brigadeiros you can put in the guests' treat bags. The cake prices are a little more expensive than at a standard bakery, but for us the cost was worth it, both for the level of service and the overall quality of the product. It really helped make our son's birthdays special. https://www.instagram.com/mfcakedesigner/?hl=en https://www.blogdamf.com/
