Churrascaria Paranoá

Churrascaria Paranoá is not just a restaurant, it is a living piece of Brasília’s history. Widely regarded as the oldest continuously operating restaurant in the capital, this hidden gem near the Paranoá Dam offers far more than excellent food. It offers a direct connection to the early days of Brasília itself.

At first glance, many people driving past the restaurant might mistake it for a simple old roadside building sitting quietly near the dam. But appearances can be deceiving. Behind its rustic exterior lies one of the most historically fascinating dining spots in the Federal District.

The restaurant was originally built in 1956 to feed the thousands of workers involved in constructing the Paranoá Dam during the creation of Brasília. According to local history, at the height of the construction period, the restaurant served more than 5,000 workers per day. It is also said that President Juscelino Kubitschek regularly visited the construction site to monitor the progress of the dam and the rapidly growing new capital.

Today, the restaurant proudly preserves this remarkable history.

Inside and around the property, visitors will find historical photographs documenting the construction of the dam, the workers who built it, and life in Brasília during its earliest years. Current owner Fábio Martins Santos, son of the founder, is passionate about the history of the restaurant and often happily shares stories, memories, and additional photographs with curious guests.

The menu is extensive, offering more than 50 different dishes ranging from lamb and free-range chicken to more unusual regional specialties such as frog legs and alligator meat. However, what truly made Churrascaria Paranoá famous is its grilled picanha, tender, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. For many visitors, it is among the best traditional barbecue experiences in Brasília.

Another pleasant surprise is the pricing, which remains extremely reasonable considering both the portion sizes and the quality of the food. Families especially appreciate the large outdoor space and the old playground, which has entertained children for more than six decades.

Visiting during the late afternoon or evening on weekends adds yet another highlight: the spectacular sunset views over the area surrounding the dam. Combined with the restaurant’s historic atmosphere, rustic charm, and traditional Brazilian barbecue, it creates a uniquely Brasília experience.

For anyone interested in history, authentic local food, or discovering one of the capital’s true hidden treasures, Churrascaria Paranoá is a place that should not be missed.
