Praça do Cruzeiro is one of the most historically significant locations in Brasília and, at 1,174 meters above sea level, also the highest point in the city. Long before Brasília officially existed, this hilltop site already held symbolic importance for the future capital of Brazil.
In 1955, before construction of Brasília had even begun, a large cross was erected at Praça do Cruzeiro to mark the future location of the new capital. The original cross later deteriorated and was replaced with a replica in 1975. Today, the original can be seen at Catedral Nossa Senhora Aparecida, better known as the Metropolitan Cathedral of Brasília.
Praça do Cruzeiro also became the setting for an important moment in the city’s early history. On November 30th, 1956, the first evangelical religious service of the future capital took place here, further cementing the square’s cultural and historical importance.
Unfortunately, despite its historical relevance, many visitors pass through Praça do Cruzeiro without realizing its significance. Apart from a small informational sign, there is little to indicate the major role this location played in the foundation of Brasília.
Today, however, the square has gained a new kind of popularity among locals and visitors alike. It is widely regarded as one of the best places in Brasília to watch the sunset, especially during the dry season when the skies turn vibrant shades of orange, pink, and red over the city’s skyline. The elevated position provides stunning panoramic views and attracts photographers, families, couples, and anyone looking to relax at the end of the day.
On Sundays, the area transforms into a lively social gathering point with numerous food trucks, street food vendors, and açaí stalls setting up throughout the park. The relaxed atmosphere, open space, and cooler evening temperatures make it a favorite destination for locals looking to spend time outdoors.
Whether you are interested in Brasília’s history, searching for one of the city’s best sunset spots, or simply looking for a pleasant place to spend a Sunday afternoon, Praça do Cruzeiro is definitely worth a visit.

I came here to write a post about Billy and I see there already is one! So I'll just add my experience. When I was brand-new to Brasilia I did a group tour of Brasilia. This is a really great tour - you'll learn not only the layout of the city and the history of why it's been done that way, but also get to see all the big monuments and best architecture. I would really recommend this tour if you have family or friends visiting. You'll learn so much about the city, and your guests will feel like they actually know the city.

Moving is often a stressful and daunting task, but AAA Moving & Relocations LLC made it a breeze!
The team was fantastic - they were professional, efficient, friendly and patient! They took great care in packing and securing all of my belongings, and even went above and beyond to collect a few items that I had forgotten.
Paulo Woolny, the owner of the company, was also incredibly helpful throughout the process. He provided transparent and accurate quotes upfront, so there were no surprises when it came to the cost of my move. He also kept me informed every step of the way, which really put my mind at ease. If you want a day trip outside the city, Billy does really great tours to Cristalina, Pirenopolis, etc. I went on a Cristalina small group tour with him and it was really fun. My son is still talking about it two years later.
