Praça do Cruzeiro is one of the most historically significant locations in Brasília and, at 1,174 meters above sea level, also the highest point in the city. Long before Brasília officially existed, this hilltop site already held symbolic importance for the future capital of Brazil.

In 1955, before construction of Brasília had even begun, a large cross was erected at Praça do Cruzeiro to mark the future location of the new capital. The original cross later deteriorated and was replaced with a replica in 1975. Today, the original can be seen at Catedral Nossa Senhora Aparecida, better known as the Metropolitan Cathedral of Brasília.

Praça do Cruzeiro also became the setting for an important moment in the city’s early history. On November 30th, 1956, the first evangelical religious service of the future capital took place here, further cementing the square’s cultural and historical importance.
