Egon’s Supermercado

Button

Located about 55 kilometres from central Brasília, Egon’s Supermercado may seem like a long drive for grocery shopping — but once you visit, you quickly understand why so many people happily make the trip.

The journey itself is already part of the experience. Leaving Brasília behind, the road passes through the agricultural heart of the Federal District, with vast fields of soybeans, corn, and, during the right season, stunning sunflower plantations that stretch across the landscape. This rural region was originally developed through the Projeto de Assentamento Dirigido do Distrito Federal (PAD-DF), created to establish an important farming zone to support the growing capital.

The story of Egon’s Supermercado is deeply connected to this agricultural history. Egon Prediger, whose family has German roots, moved to the region from a German settlement in Rio Grande do Sul during the 1980s to work in soybean farming. Soon after arriving, he and his wife realized that local workers and farming families lacked basic services, particularly a restaurant and a proper supermarket.

What began as a small local business has since grown into a nearly 2,000-square-metre supermarket that remains family owned and operated by the Prediger family.

At first glance, the store feels like a traditional countryside supermarket — simple, spacious, welcoming, and exceptionally clean. Shelves are filled with everything from work boots, cowboy hats, and agricultural supplies to vegetables, household items, pet food, and cachaça.

But the real highlight begins when you discover the incredible range of artisanal products and specialty foods.

Egon’s is especially famous for its extensive selection of herbs and spices sold under the Família Prediger brand. Many of these seasonings are difficult, or nearly impossible, to find in Brasília itself. Food lovers and home cooks often travel here specifically for these products.

The supermarket is also renowned for its outstanding charcuterie. Their homemade salamis, smoked sausages, cured meats, and specialty products have developed something of a cult following among locals and visitors alike.

The quality is exceptional, and the salami in particular is considered by many to be among the best in the region.

The butcher section is another major attraction, offering a huge variety of cuts of beef, pork, and lamb, alongside products such as smoked hams, Frankfurters, Kraków sausages, blood sausages, and traditional pickled vegetables.

According to the Prediger family, many of the meats, vegetables, herbs, and ingredients are organic and sourced directly from nearby farms, helping maintain both freshness and quality.

One of the biggest surprises for first-time visitors is the pricing. Despite the excellent quality, prices are often significantly lower than what you would pay in Brasília for comparable products.

Directly across the road, visitors will also find Pad Bier Restaurante, a casual restaurant with a small beer garden serving buffet-style food priced by weight. Just like the supermarket itself, the restaurant is known for generous portions, excellent quality, and very reasonable prices. On weekends, especially Saturdays, the area becomes a popular destination for motorcycle riders and day-trippers from Brasília.

Altogether, a visit to Egon’s Supermercado offers far more than shopping. It is a chance to experience the rural side of the Federal District, enjoy a scenic drive through beautiful farmland, discover outstanding artisanal food products, and spend a relaxed day outside the city. Definitely worth the drive.
