If you ask long-time residents of Brasília where they go when they want a bit of nature without leaving the city, Parque das Garças in Lago Norte is a place that comes up again and again.
Located on the shores of Lake Paranoá, the park feels very different from the more formal parks found in the Plano Piloto. There are no grand monuments, famous buildings, or tourist attractions here. Instead, what you get is something many people appreciate even more: peace, open space, and one of the nicest lakeside environments in Brasília.
The park is particularly popular with walkers, runners, cyclists, families, and people simply looking for a place to relax. In the late afternoon the atmosphere changes again, with families arriving to enjoy the cooler temperatures and watch the sunset over the lake.
Unlike some of the city's busier parks, Parque das Garças generally maintains a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere. It is not unusual to see people reading under a tree, photographers waiting for wildlife, or friends gathering for a casual picnic. The park also attracts paddleboarders and kayakers who use the nearby lake access points.
Facilities are relatively simple compared to some of Brasília's larger recreational parks, but that is part of the charm. Visitors come here primarily for the natural surroundings rather than organized activities or commercial attractions.
For expats and newcomers to Brasília, Parque das Garças offers a glimpse of why so many residents love Lago Norte. It combines the city's unique relationship with Lake Paranoá, the beauty of the cerrado landscape, and a slower pace that can sometimes be difficult to find in a capital city.
Whether you are looking for a morning walk, a quiet place to think, an opportunity to photograph wildlife, or simply somewhere to enjoy one of Brasília's famous sunsets, Parque das Garças is well worth a visit.
Just don't be surprised if you arrive planning to stay for thirty minutes and end up spending the entire afternoon by the water.
Parque das Garças is one of those places that reminds visitors that Brasília is not only about modernist architecture and government buildings, it is also a city surrounded by nature.

I came here to write a post about Billy and I see there already is one! So I'll just add my experience. When I was brand-new to Brasilia I did a group tour of Brasilia. This is a really great tour - you'll learn not only the layout of the city and the history of why it's been done that way, but also get to see all the big monuments and best architecture. I would really recommend this tour if you have family or friends visiting. You'll learn so much about the city, and your guests will feel like they actually know the city.

If you want a day trip outside the city, Billy does really great tours to Cristalina, Pirenopolis, etc. I went on a Cristalina small group tour with him and it was really fun. My son is still talking about it two years later.
