One of the nicest escapes from Brasília is probably Pirenópolis, or simply “Piri” as almost everyone calls it. Located about two hours from Brasília, it has become one of those classic weekend destinations where people go to slow down a little, eat too much, drink caipirinhas, and pretend they are going to reconnect with nature before ending up in a bar somewhere in the historic center.
The town itself is charming, with cobblestone streets, colonial buildings, churches, little cafés, and colorful old houses that somehow make everything feel relaxed the moment you arrive. Unlike Brasília’s modernist layout, Pirenópolis feels old, slightly chaotic, and full of character.
A big part of the attraction is simply wandering around the historic center. There are plenty of small restaurants, bars, artisan shops, and pousadas hidden throughout the town. On weekends and public holidays the main streets can get very busy, especially at night, but that is also part of the atmosphere.
Food is another very serious activity in Pirenópolis. You find everything from traditional Goiás countryside cooking to more refined restaurants, and most people seem to spend half the trip eating.
But the real reason many people go is the nature around the town. The region is full of waterfalls, hiking trails, rivers, and swimming spots. Some are very easy to reach while others require a bit more effort, and occasionally a level of physical fitness people only discover they do not have halfway through the hike.
The waterfalls around Pirenópolis are beautiful, especially during the greener months, and many charge a small entrance fee to help maintain the areas. The famous Cachoeira do Serrano is one of the better-known spots, and for those who enjoy adrenaline, there is even rappelling down waterfalls.
Ample pousadas to luxury boutique hotels, so it works equally well for backpackers, families, couples, or people just wanting a quick break from Brasília.
Honestly, Pirenópolis is one of those places that reminds people there is much more to Central Brazil than government buildings and traffic circles.
