This is a really great tour - you'll learn not only the layout of the city and the history of why it's been done that way, but also get to see all the big monuments and best architecture. I would really recommend this tour if you have family or friends visiting. You'll learn so much about the city, and your guests will feel like they actually know the city. I recommend this product. One of the community initiatives is this shop. Commercial São Benedito, formerly known as Cobogó Mercado de Objetos, is a cooperative local producer shop located in SCRN 704/705 in Asa Norte. It has several different vendors on two levels, selling everything from secondhand clothes, art and craft articles, jewelry, pottery and plants. They also operate a great coffee shop with outside seating under a magnificent Brazilian fig tree (Ficus cyclophylla), which is an IUCN Red List Endangered species. For the kids, there is a small playground. This is a great little place to buy some locally produced products and have a nice coffee and cake, all while supporting small business owners. The display area is not only the store itself, but also the huge area in the back where you find most of the outdoor plants, scrubs and potting mix and ornamental stones. The staff at Viveiro Pau-Brasília are not only friendly but also incredibly knowledgeable, ready to assist you with any gardening inquiries you may have. And if you after a product or plant they don’t stock, they will give you advise where to find it. The owner, Nicholas Behr, is a renowned poet and author with several published books under his belt. As a bonus treat, he hosts poetry readings regularly at the nursery, creating a unique and artistic ambiance. Nicholas Behr is also fluent in German, English, and French. If you're lucky enough to cross paths with him, or just ask for him, during your visit, don't hesitate to strike up a conversation. He is always more than happy to chat with visitors and share valuable advice on all things related to gardening. The next store besides Viveiro Pau-Brasília has a very good coffee shop at the back which serves great coffee and snacks. Brasilia by Public Transport Document Document Document Document Brasilia-wide Not Applicable General Information < Search All Button Brasilia was built for about 500,000 people – now over 4.2 million people live and work here, making it the third biggest city in Brazil. It was also designed to be a car-friendly city, so the public transport system is a bit of a mess. Buses Rodoviária do Plano Piloto, in the heart of Brasilia, is the central bus station here. The buses leave and arrive from everywhere in the Federal District and its surroundings, including Goiás. At peak times, buses tend to be crowded, especially to the satellite cities. If possible, avoid them between 7 am and 8:30 am, and from 5 pm to 7 pm. During the night the fleet is drastically reduced. The public transport system infrastructure is in shambles; the buses are mostly old, overcrowded and if there is a timetable we don’t know why because the frequency with which buses pass by is unpredictable. The bus fares are cheap for us expats, but not for the locals. So if there is an increase in fares it is not uncommon to see the locals, who depend on public transportation to go to and from work, riot violently. Subway Yes, Brasilia has a subway, but I think less than 5% of the population in Brasilia are using it. The line begins at Rodoviária do Plano Piloto, the central bus station, goes through Asa Sul, Park Shopping and Rodoviária Interstate, Feira do Guará and to the satellite cities of Águas Claras, Taguatinga, Ceilândia and Samambaia. During the morning and evening peak hours the trains are totally overcrowded. Timetables are pretty much adhered to. General Warning Be incredibly careful when using public transport, especially during peak hours. Pickpocketing is a real danger and the ladrões are very clever in doing so. So if you have to use public transport, don’t flash your phones around and keep your belongings secure. When I was brand-new to Brasilia I did a group tour of Brasilia. This is a really great tour - you'll learn not only the layout of the city and the history of why it's been done that way, but also get to see all the big monuments and best architecture. I would really recommend this tour if you have family or friends visiting. You'll learn so much about the city, and your guests will feel like they actually know the city. I recommend this product. Paulo Woolny, the owner of the company, was also incredibly helpful throughout the process. He provided transparent and accurate quotes upfront, so there were no surprises when it came to the cost of my move. He also kept me informed every step of the way, which really put my mind at ease. He is always willing to please you if he can and if something is under his control. When my removal reached Italy, their Italian counterparts were just as efficient and careful. It is a typical Brazilian bar with wooden tables and benches on the veranda, and plastic tables and chairs under a huge mango tree in the courtyard (watch out for falling mangos in the mango season). The service can be a bit slow at times, but it has improved in the last few months. The food is typical Brazilian, and they have a good selection of dishes. They are well known for the oxtail dish. The beer is served ice cold and they have a large selection of cocktails. Bar Dos Cunhados is a great place to go with friends and have a good time. Just watch out during the football season as this bar is also a Flamengo fans meeting point, so it can get a bit loud and rowdy. Tucked away right in the middle of Lago Norte, it is a cooperative gastronomy and art space run by Lago Norte residence. Now when you approach Quituart, you might not think much about the structure, a huge tin shed that looks pretty run down. But inside you will find over 25 spaces that sell a bit of art, more alcohol and a lot of different foods. And they surround a big open space where people can consume their food and beverages. At Quituart you will find food from every corner of Brazil and one of the best places must be Jamburanas that serve typical food from Pará. Le Birosque sells some fantastic pork dishes that will make you come back for more. And there is Il Basilico that serves Italian food. And of couse you have a hamburger and pizza place to choose from. We could go on and on, but the best thing is if you go there yourself and experience it. Quituart is only open on Friday night, and on Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 to 16:00. And its main customer base is the residence of Lago Norte. You could get the feeling that the residence does not want to promote Quituart to the “outsiders”, as not many people from other parts of Brasilia have been there. One of the great advantages of Quituart is that you are not limited to one cuisine of a restaurant, but you have all the different options to choose from. Anyway, check it out. Upon entering, you feel like you are back in time in the city market in São Paulo. All the steel structure in the building was actually transported from the Mercado Municipal de São Paulo to Brasilia to create this unique atmosphere. You can still see the insignia of the Mercado Municipal de São Paulo at the huge iron gate at the back entrance. The café is rather large but very inviting, with rustic decor that complements the coffee theme. The selection of different coffees and teas is very extensive, the prices are reasonable, and the staff is very attentive and friendly. They also have free Wi-Fi which makes it an ideal spot to do some work while sipping some coffee. In addition, Mercado do Café Brasilia also offers barista courses on weekends as well as coffee tasting event and offer for sale some coffee-making equipment and accessories, such as grinders, French presses, and pour-over devices. Overall, Mercado do Café Brasilia is a great destination for coffee lovers and a great venue for a larger group of people. If you are planning to visit the place it is advised that you take the W2 to get there as parking on the W3 is very limited. If you live in Asa Sul and Asa Norte, the apartment blocks are well within walking distance to the commercial blocks where you go to supermarkets, pharmacies, restaurants, and other stores. If you want to go to any special shops or areas, walking is not the best choice, unless you like a long hike and have plenty of time. There is a public transport system, but that leaves a lot to be desired. In other words, if you do not have your own transport, you might want to try Uber or 99 (the local ride-share service which is quite cheap). About pedestrian crossings, please do not expect them to function like in the rest of the world. Drivers will not stop for you when they see you at the side of the road at a crossing. You have to give the famous "sign of life" (extending your arm horizontally in front of you from the sidewalk) and the drivers will stop for you to cross safely. General Warning While Brasilia is general secure, there are areas where you should not wander during night-time, like the Rodoviária do Plano Piloto, the central bus station, or the tunnels under the Eixo, which is one of the main roads from east to west in Brasilia and divides the western part of Brasilia from the eastern part. During nighttime these tunnels are a favorite hunting place for criminal elements and should be avoided. I was shocked to learn he’d never been there. One thing to like about Brasilia is its weather and parks, so get outside people! I thought I’d write reviews of some of the best parks I’ve been to, as motivation for people to get outside more. Many people who arrive in Brasilia usually end up putting on weight. Some complain that the city isn’t suitable for cycling and walking compared to their home countries. But having beautiful parks within reaching distance for most, in my humble opinion, makes up for this. Parque da Asa Delta is situated in Lago Sul between QL 12 and 14. Firstly, let me talk about the negatives. There is no allocated parking for the park, most people will use the car park to Deck Brasil (shopping) and have to cross a busy road. I suggest you use the crossing down the road unless you’ve got Usain-Bolt-like ability. Another negative for me is you don’t see any vendors inside the park, there have been times I would murder for an ice cold água de coco while walking round. On the other hand, the positives are numerous! Dogs and push bikes are allowed. You can see some beautiful views of the lake and JK bridge. There’s a long path that runs adjacent to the lake and links you to Parque Península Sul. There are a few security guards, but the park is so big that during quiet periods you can walk for a long time without seeing anyone. Since there’s a cycle, run /walk path, and situated next to the lake you will see triathlon groups training there. Here’s a workout for you guys to try if you feel you’re ready for this type of intensity. Make sure you warm up properly, then pick your best path up to the main hill in the park. Sprint up the hill and slow walk down Complete 20 star jumps 15 push ups 10 squats 5 burpees Rest until you can easily breathe through your nose or heartbeat 130bpm (depending on age) Repeat up to five sets or as many times as you can in 30 minutes. *Adjust the workout to fit your level. Embaixadas Bike Parque Document Document Document Document Asa Sul Free 7 Days a Week Mountain Biking < Search All Button Not many people know it, but right smack bang in the middle of the embassy area in Asa Sul there is a very well-maintained mountain bike park called the Embaixadas Bike Parque. The mountain bike park was built by the city of Brasilia, and they maintain it as well. It has plenty of jumps, corners and tracks for every level of experience. It also has a kid’s training area. The only negative aspect of the park is that there is no shelter, so this can be an issue during the rain season as well as in the hot season with no way to protect from the sun. The mountain bike park is located in front of the Lebanese and Mexican embassy in SES 807, and there is no entry fee to use it. On weekends sometimes a food truck will be there to provide food and drinks, but don’t bank on it. And before we forget it, the park has a pretty awesome view over Lake Paranoá. The school-year of the SIS starts in late January or early February like the public Brazilian school system. This however provides an option for children with their birthday in August to January to start school half a year earlier compared with other “international” schools. The school is located in the heart of the plano piloto, next to the main city park. If you bring your child by car (like everybody does) you can drive right up to the front door, where the concierge of the school will open the door, help the child out and in covid19 times make sure hands and schoolbag are disinfected. On the way back you will wait in a motorcade with other parents until your child is brought to the door and seated again in your car. The SIS always tried and tries to remain open during the pandemic but provides a full remote alternative for children who prefer to stay at home (“hybrid mode”). With the strict hygiene concept and given its small size the school has managed to provide considerably more in house classes than most other schools in Brasilia, including all the other international schools. The school uses Microsoft Teams both for remote learning and for the communication with parents or caretakers. The school also provides its own Android or IOS App for annunciations to the parents and other information. The school is a relatively new one, founded 2011, and rather small. There is just one class per grade with about 15 to 20 students. The school provides a kindergarten/preschool for children aged three to six, a primary school (grade 1 to 4), a secondary school (grade 5 to 8) and it plans to open a college, culminating in the national Brazilian college degree and the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB). The school is run by an international school company owned by a German schoolbook publisher with other schools in Switzerland (you guessed it, right?), Germany and Rio de Janeiro. There is some international exchange between all the SIS schools. The school has a demanding schedule. School starts at eight o'clock and goes until four o'clock in the afternoon, five days a week. There is playtime in the primary school and physical education, but the school has considerably more lessons compared with other schools. 50% of all lessons are held in English and 50% in Portuguese. Most classes are held by a native speaker of the respective language. For students in higher grades German and French are offered as additional languages. Most of the students are Portuguese native speakers from Brazilian upper middle class families. There are, however, some expat children, mostly German native speakers. The schools offers a special Portuguese lesson for foreigners, but clearly falls behind schools like the Escola das Nações on that matter. Given the digital agenda of the school it may come with little surprise that computer science classes are provided starting at first grade. The school is able to communicate with parents in English, but it can be a hassle to get the responsible persons on the phone. In urgent cases (e.g.: child sick) however I always got a call in English immediately. The school puts a lot of efforts in the two meals (lunch and “tea time”) it provides daily. A great variation of fresh food like vegetables and fruits is prepared and served every day. A school nutrition expert will monitor both the preparation of the food and the students during lunch time. Students are individually encouraged to eat healthy and parents informed if the eating habits of their child are of concern. Mineral water is supplied instead of tap water which might come as a relief for northern hemisphere stomachs. The annual fee in the primary school is about R$ 60.000,-, which is expensive, but considerably cheaper compared with other international schools. Do not be fooled by the first impression when you see the store, not really big and absolutely chaotic. There is stuff hanging from the ceiling and the shelves are stacked. The service counter is in the back of the store and always busy. But this shop has everything; you can buy nails, screws, nuts, etc by weight, get electrical transformers, tools, gardening tools. They have everything from plumbing, electrical to hydraulics. The staff is immensely helpful and will find everything you require. And if they do not have it, they will give you advice where to find it. And the prices are very reasonable for Brasilia and you will not get hit by a gringo tax. The farm is owned by Rafael and Mara and they opened their farm for visitors in 2020. They only operate from Thursday to Sunday and since it is a small family business one has to book either a morning or afternoon slot. Rafael and Mara are super friendly and will do everything to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. Roncador Farm offers three packages to visit their farm. The basic one is just to visit the farm and have a hike around the beautiful area, including the waterfalls as well as the spectacular lookout over the Cerrado. The next package is the entry to the farm including breakfast and lunch or lunch and afternoon tea. And the third package is the horse riding option which also includes the meals. For the different package prices please check their website. Overall, this place is ideal to escape the busy Brasilia life for a while without driving to Pirienopolis or the Chapada. Located in CA 7 in Lago Norte, it opened its doors in July 2021 and was an instant hit with the locals. The brains behind the coffeeshop are Catia Lopes and Camila Marconi, who wanted to open a community coffee shop where locals can meet, remote work and have a healthy choice of food. And they are environmentally friendly, so you will not find any plastic utensils or packaging. All products are produced on the premises with fresh ingrediencies, and you can watch the bakers through a glass window working. The corner shop has a large veranda with tables, chairs, a sofa and even a swing. The products on offer are typical for a bakery, like different breads, croissants, cakes, etc. And for breakfast and lunch you can order all sorts of dishes from the menu that are very tasty. Try the guacamole toast with egg on top. And the coffee is sensational. And to top it all off, the prices are very reasonable. For example, if you order a guacamole toast with egg, a orange juice and a cappuccino it will set you back under R$40. Padóca is open 7 days a week and on Saturday and Sundays, as well as on public holidays, they offer a breakfast buffet. A sign says "Piazza Navona" over the figure of one of the allegorical statues in Rome's beautifully fountained and most charming square, the iconic Piazza Navona itself. Immediately past it, an outdoor veranda is lined with tableclothed tables and staff that pays attention to you as you come close, ready to accommodate you where you please. You are entering Trattoria da Rosario, one of Brasilia's longtime powerplaces as much for the clientele it attracts as for the powerful pack of impeccable Italian dishes as varied as the food-loving country itself. Multi-million-dollar deals and political alliances are said to be regularly forged over its tables, power players from all corners of Brazil are often spotted commanding a table over wine and San Pellegrino. Italian tradition and flavors rule the ambiance, and the menu has plenty to seduce you from chef Rosario's Napolitan roots as from his well-developed culinary creations inspired by the diverse regions and islands of the peninsula. There is a subtle excellence in the air. The hosts and waiters know their stuff. It is evident that they all know exactly what they’re doing. It is the sort of place where Chef Rosário Tessier can be seen personally seeing that his clients are satisfied. The menu itself is more sophisticated and exquisitely elaborated than in an old-school trattoria. Offerings range from appetizers to pastas, risottos, meats, game, seafood, and desserts, all with tangibly fresh ingredients. You would be forgiven for thinking you had just been transported to the Vesuvius apron and were suddenly going the wrong way down its medieval labyrinth of one-way streets and narrow alleys, past wrought-iron balconies, and the smell of pride in Neapolitan food and its glory on lunch tables. It is the flavor of Italian gastronomy at its best in Brazil; it is unmistakable, and in a short time it is on your fork and the plate in front of you. The menu choices are a generous Italian feast: To start, Appetizer options include: Antipasto Italia- Parma ham, Italian mortadella, cheese Bel Paese, Grana Padano cheese and black olives; Bruschette al Pomodoro- Freshly baked toasted bread with Italian San Marzano tomato sauce, basil, mozzarella and Grana Padano; a Carpaccio di Carne con Carciofini Carpaccio of beef with mustard sauce, artichoke blades and Grana Padano; an Insalata del Golfo with mixed green leaves salad with shrimp to herb sauce, squid and octopus; a Chef's Salad which was delicious with a mustard-and-herbs dressing. There are more choices, but you will have to check those out when you visit. Pasta choices include variously dressed fettuccines, linguines, pennes, raviolis, gnocchis, and spaghettis. My favorites are those with prawns and gorgonzola, but you can also get the classics alla carbonara, Bolognese, Vesuvio, and puttanesca. All 3 ofd its gnocchi offerings are straight out of some of the best Italian kitchens in flavor, though I did find the gnocchi with spinach and gorgonzola too heavy on the oils as was the case with the risottos. The Saltimboca alla Romana was an exquisitely prepared filet mignon with Parma ham and sage, and a subtle Marsala wine sauce with fettuccine Alfredo; the Filetto Palio di Siena was delectable in an exotic Madeira sauce and red wine. It was served with cheese risotto, Grana Padano, and sun-dried tomatoes; and the Agnello Controfiletto was a perfectly cooked boneless, crusted loin of lamb in the Marsala wine sauce with reduced balsamic vinegar. It was served with a hearty Venetian black risotto, a classic with bountiful squid providing the moody ink that gives the dish its color. There are at least a half-a-dozen other fish dishes I have yet to try. There is a suitable selection of "sobremesas" which include Creme Brule, and a Panna cotta con Crema di Frutti di Bosco, served with a red-fruit coulis. Of course, there is Tiramisu, but I enjoyed most a new addition to its menu, a green apple tart on a crisp cinnamon mille-feuille and served with a smooth vanilla ice cream. There were no Vespas buzzing around and no layers of posters over graffiti and grime nearby, but in leaving the experience is notable for its authentic flavors, the elegant dishes, the upbeat staff with hints of that legendary Italian charm, and the feeling that you have just eaten at one of the best restaurants in Brasilia, that you have been served impeccable Italian classics delivered con brio. Trattoria da Rosario is located at SHIS QI17 Bl.H Lj.215, South Lake in Fashion Park and is open for lunch and dinner from noon till midnight Tuesday through Saturday closing for an hour in the afternoon, and Sunday from noon till 5 pm. Owned by two brothers who are huge music fans, as reflected in the decor, and the fact that there is always great music playing, especially classic rock (though not too loud - very family friendly). All contributes to a very enjoyable atmosphere. During normal times, they also regularly have live music at night, especially rock and blues. Food is excellent, especially their chilli, and they serve what is a good contender for the best burger in DF. It´s near the end of Avenida do Sol (shortly before Ouro Vermelho), but well worth the trip. These pickup locations are also shared by other rideshare companies. Most people head there after they picked up their luggage and head to the pickup spots marked A, B or C and once they arrived, they call an Uber via the app. Now it is not uncommon that while you walk to the pickup spot you will be approached by a person claiming that they are an Uber driver and are ready to take you to your destination for a set price. Well, that set price is way over what a real Uber driver would charge you. It’s a scam. DO NOT ACCEPT RIDES WHEN YOU ARE APPROCHED IN THE BRASILIA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. Besides paying a higher price for the ride, you are also very vulnerable to be robbed of your possessions or worse, especially if you are female. So if you want to take a Uber, or another rideshare company, from the airport, always book your ride through the app. The app will tell you the make, model and license plate of your booked car.
