The more they learned about the impact of conventional agriculture on the health of people and the world we live in, the more their interest and desired shifted. Instead of planting in a manner that always requires more external inputs, including fertilizers and pesticides to prop up an ever more vulnerable system, they became captivated by several movements in regenerative agriculture. They envisioned agriculture as an opportunity for humans to play an active role in building up soils and ecosystems, making them increasingly resilient and fertile. Acquiring an 80-hectare farm approximately 50 kilometers outside Brasilia, and dedicated a portion of the land, which had been converted by the previous owners, to pasture using invasive vegetation, to cultivating organic fruits and vegetables. A large portion of the land they started regenerating using syntropic agriculture, a method pioneered by Swiss innovator Ernst Götsch. Recognizing the curiosity surrounding their journey from teaching at an International School in Brasilia to venturing into organic farming, Jessica and her team launched the Farm Day Brunch initiative. Each final Saturday of the month, starting at 9:30, the farm hosts a brunch featuring a nutritious array of quiches, cakes, breads with fruit spreads, freshly picked fruits, juices, and aromatic coffee (both Jonathan and Sarah are experienced baristas), sourced primarily from the farm and neighboring organic producers. Throughout the brunch, Jessica and her team share anecdotes of their transition to organic farming, recounting the challenges and triumphs encountered along the way. Following the meal, guests embark on a guided tour of the farm, learning about its agricultural practices, environmental challenges unique to the Cerrado. Children are invited to interact with the farm's goats and cows, adding a playful dimension to the experience. The excursion concludes around noon, but for those seeking further adventure, an extensive hike through the breathtaking Cerrado landscape awaits. Jonathan will happily identify native plant species for you, and, if the season is right and your courage allows, share with you some of the rarer and lesser known Cerrado fruits! When I was brand-new to Brasilia I did a group tour of Brasilia. This is a really great tour - you'll learn not only the layout of the city and the history of why it's been done that way, but also get to see all the big monuments and best architecture. I would really recommend this tour if you have family or friends visiting. You'll learn so much about the city, and your guests will feel like they actually know the city. I recommend this product. The problem is that most of the people that call themselves electricians have no real qualifications and learned the basics from their friends. If you talk to other expats about trade services here in Brasilia you will hear some real horror stories (for example we know one expat that had is house completely rewired, but the electrical system on the second floor had not no safety fuses installed). So if you are after a real good electrician, please contact Jesus dos Santos Ribeiro from JSR Engenharia. Jesus has a degree in electrical engineering and postgraduates in occupational safety and power engineering as well as a master’s degree in renewable energy. Jesus worked for a lot of expats here in Brasilia and everybody that uses his services talks very highly about his professionalism and his skills. He is also the main electrician for the German embassy. Jesus is also very honest and will not recommend any work that is not needed, unlike many other tradespeople. Wrong. They are only a few and by far the best is Rogerio Resende. With over 45 years’ experience in tuning pianos, Rogério is the preferred tuning specialist by many embassies, including the USA, Germany, Switzerland to name a few. And most of the hotels are using him as well. Besides tuning pianos, Rogério also established a museum of pianos, renovates and builds his own pianos as well as sells and rents them. Just talk to him about your needs and he will certainly be able to help you. Unfortunately, he doesn’t speak English, but he certainly knows how to make your piano play perfectly. If you went there during the week, you would find mostly locals hanging around having some drinks and chatting with each other. But it is a different story on Sunday night from 18:00 onwards. This is when local musicians meet at the bar to play Samba and other Brazilian tunes. And that is when the bar and the parking lot are being taken over by not only locals, but by people from over Brasilia to party and dance the night away. It’s all a bit chaotic, but that is part of its charm. There is no cover charge to listen and dance to the music and the beverage prices are very low. They serve only pizza, which is ok, but you can always get some food from the Ilha Dos Pães bakery that is two stores down. Great place to go on Sunday nights and meet some very friendly and welcoming locals. It´s named after the chandelier (“lustre”, in Portuguese) that hangs over the bar and that can be seen from almost every table. The owner (who is also the mixologist behind the bar) really knows his shit and is very approachable. The menu has many classic cocktails - executed with perfection - and some in-house creations, all worth exploring. The soundtrack provides for great ambience, which varies greatly in style (sometimes jazz, sometimes latin, sometimes Brazilian MPB) but always has one thing in common: it´s always suave and sophisticated. It´s not a place to go when you´re hungry: they have great finger food and small plates, but nothing hearty. However, one can order anything from the surrounding eateries, if need be. Beside the cadies and chocolate, Casa do Chocolate stocks some very hard to find baking products, like different flours, rare chocolate powder, granulates and flakes as well as food coloring. And of course, they carry all sort of baking trays in all shapes and forms, baking paper and many baking utensils. When I was brand-new to Brasilia I did a group tour of Brasilia. This is a really great tour - you'll learn not only the layout of the city and the history of why it's been done that way, but also get to see all the big monuments and best architecture. I would really recommend this tour if you have family or friends visiting. You'll learn so much about the city, and your guests will feel like they actually know the city. I recommend this product. Now with over 4.2 million people in and around Brasilia, it can be a challenge. The cars in Brasilia are everything from the latest models to cars that should not be on the road. And the typical Brazilian driver, not all of them I might add, think that they are the only vehicle on the road and left, right and behind does not count. Most drivers adhere to the speed limit and the lanes, but the amount of wannabe race-car drivers and drifters are still huge. Be careful to watch your speed, especially on the main roads. Speeders are captured electronically and the cameras are merciless, issuing tickets through the mail. Look for a rectangular sign that has the speed limit posted and says “Fiscalizção Eletrônica” underneath – within a half-mile you’ll see two shorter poles on the right side of the road. Those are the camera traps. You may also find the race-car drivers slow down dramatically at these points and then take off like a shot just afterward! Indicators should be an optional extra here as many do not use them or indicate to go left and then go right. Never ever trust any indication, especially if you pull out of a side street. Most cars adhere to the red lights, but many, especially the motorbike riders, see it as a sport to race through red lights. Parking in the middle of the city is an absolute nightmare. There are hardly any parking stations and in the heart of the city, where all the ministries are, and it is extremely hard to find a parking spot. Even in the commercial quadras is can be a challenge and it is not uncommon to be blocked by a car parked behind you. If that happens, beep your horn and hope the offending driver returns promptly. Almost all parking lots are public and territory of some “parking attendants.” There is a state accreditation system for them that obliges them to wear a green vest with an identification number. With or without the vest, no one is required to pay anything. In Brasilia there are still no "rules" - as in Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo - for payment so if they demand it, do not fall for it! But if you give them a couple of reais they are happy, and you help a poor soul to feed his or her family One of the biggest challenges driving in Brasilia is that everything looks the same: quadras, commercial sectors, etc. Even for people that have lived in the city for years, it is still a challenge to find their way around. Waze will become your best friend here. And one of the biggest pains in the arse are the motoboys, or delivery drivers on motorbikes. They are the cowboys of the road; loud bikes, cutting lanes, driving with high speed through the traffic and for them there are no traffic rules. I don’t want to know how many of them die every day in Brasilia. So watch out for them at all times and never ever trust them. Having all said, you will need a car and drive here in Brasilia. It will take a time to get used to it, but you will get there. Just expect to see daily accidents, aggressive drivers and some real nutcases. In its core is the breaking of preconceptions regarding age, gender and shapes when it comes to dancing – and especially ballet. BPN students come from all backgrounds and ages. Many did ballet at a younger age but dropped out as pressure to go professional gradually increased. After years without dancing, they now express having finally found a place that understands and caters for their needs. Others, like myself, starting to live the ballerina dream at a later stage in life. I took it up when I was about 45, and ballet at BPN has given me so much joy, in addition to improved confidence, posture, and new friends, just to mention a few. The facilities, located in 503 Asa Sul, are fresh and charming. The school’s atmosphere is very friendly and it really sets out to be a second home of sorts, sporting a café where people can hang out before or after class. Important to stress that Bailarinas Por que Não? is not all about classical ballet, there are many other modalities, like Contemporary Dance, Afro-Brazilian Dances, Jazz, Lyrical Jazz and Samba. There are also a number of dance-related activities, like dance workouts and rhythmical stretching classes. The school also offers Floor Pilates, Ashtanga and Hatha Yoga, among others. There’s something for everyone at BPN. Even special, absolute beginner’s ballet classes for persons aged 60+. Teachers are experienced and welcoming. Not all of them speak English, but the universal language of dance resolves most obstacles. BPN actively reaches out to the international community in Brasilia: Cláudia, the school’s founder and executive director, is married to a former Swedish diplomat. There are discounts for expats, and special arrangements can be made for groups wanting to join. It is intersected at the heart of the city at the central bus station (Rodoviaria) and by the Eixo Monumental which runs east to west and divides Asa Sul and Asa Norte. The Eixo Rodoviario is one of the busiest streets in Brasilia, but that all changes on Sundays and public holidays when it is closed from 6:00 to 18:00; the Eixo Rodoviarioo becomes the Eixo do Lazer. All the traffic in the north to south direction is diverted on the two roads running parallel, Eixo Rodoviario east and west (ERL & ERW). Instead of cars and motorbikes you will see bicycle riders, people walking and running, rollerblades, skaters and scooters on this important artery. And you will find beside the road on the grass areas jumping castles, food and beer trucks. From time to time you will also find large food fairs and sporting events taken place on these days. It is also possible to rent bicycles and tricycles by an hourly rate. Between July and September, the ipês (a typical tree of the Cerrado) blooms in their fantastic bright colors of white, yellow, purple or pink, it is especially spectacular as the Eixo Rodoviario is full of them. It is a great place to go on these days and explore the 13 km stretch by any means, just not by car or motorbike. It opened in 1957, during the construction of Brasilia and covers nearly 140 hectares. It is located near the neighborhood of Candangolândia at the end of Asa Sul. The Zoo is open from Thursday to Sunday between 8:30 and 17:00 and the admission is $5 reais during the week and $10 reais on weekends. Currently the Zoo has over 800 animals and 185 different animal species and it a favorite place for children. The Zoo also hosts the Museu de Ciencias Naturais (Natural Sciences Museum), where visitors can take tours and learn about the different Brazilian biomes. You can also bring your picnic blanket along and go hiking. Many larger clubs charge up to R$10,000.00 per night, plus additional costs for chairs, tables, staff, and more, making them unaffordable for most people. However, there is an affordable and beautifully located option. Clube Almirante Alexandrino (CAALEX) primarily serves navy soldiers but also welcomes members of the army, air force, police force, and the DF national guard. It is located on the shores of Lake Paranoá in Asa Norte. Although it can be a bit hard to find since it is situated behind Churrascaria Nativas Grill Brasília Esplanada and not visible from the street, it offers a variety of social and recreational facilities. These facilities, which can be viewed in photographs on their website, include a gym; four football fields (one with synthetic grass); two sports courts; a sand court for volleyball and footvolley; 11 barbecues; two playgrounds; an Olympic-size swimming pool with a water slide; a children's pool; a social hall; and a lakeside area with nautical facilities for sailing and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). There is also a bar/restaurant. While the club officially closes at 18:00 on weekends, it can be rented in the evenings, ensuring privacy for events and parties. The Brasília Hash House Harriers selected the club for the Pan South America Hash in June 2024, renting several BBQ areas for their event. With 140 participants, the space proved ideal and could have easily accommodated up to 1,000 people. The location was praised by every participant as ideal and beautiful, making it a perfect choice for the event. Additionally, the club staff were incredibly helpful and welcoming. In addition to the outdoor areas, there are several indoor venues popular for weddings and parties. The club’s manager, Fernando, is extremely helpful and pleasant to work with. He is dedicated to making your event successful and has many contacts with event specialists, such as caterers, music bands, and cultural groups, which he is happy to share. If you're looking for an affordable event and party space, check out CAALEX and talk to Fernando. You won't regret it. When I was brand-new to Brasilia I did a group tour of Brasilia. This is a really great tour - you'll learn not only the layout of the city and the history of why it's been done that way, but also get to see all the big monuments and best architecture. I would really recommend this tour if you have family or friends visiting. You'll learn so much about the city, and your guests will feel like they actually know the city. I recommend this product.
