The vibrant ambiance took in the Friday lunchtime crowd under the giant open space of Mané Mercado Virgula, a striking architectural addition meshed into the grandeur of Brasilia’s Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha and the striking high rises around the city’s Monumental Axis for a commanding view of the whole cityscape. You are in a bustling food hall with a generous number of food choices, a veritable gastronomic Circus Maximus or at least a version of Pontão under one roof. The place is cool and vaguely exciting with a modern energy that is as much Brasilia as a piece of the kind of food markets that took over the streets in New York’s Soho, Barcelona, and countless German and Italian cities. But Mané Virgula Market is much more than that. It is a carefully curated selection of restaurant offerings that range from Argentinian to Arab to Japanese, to churrascos, burgers, roasted birds, Brazilian specialties, pastries, beers, wines, and several culinary offerings that each specialize in various aspects sure to please foodies and dabblers alike. It is a paean to Brasilian cuisine; most of the food kiosks there are restaurants that already exist and have been successful in pleasing the public in Brasilia for years. Commanding a corner of the vast covered area and very busy is Lima, Cocina Peruana by Chef Marco Espinoza of Taypá, one of Brasilia’s best innovative, elegant restaurants. Though there is some table service, most clients seem to be content standing in line and placing their orders, mixing and matching various tastes. If it is pork you crave, you can find a helping of Le Birosque’s porceta, long famous with Quituart diners Virgula is the word for comma, the punctuation mark that signals short interval or difference in pitch in a sentence, Mane Mercado Virgula is an R$8 million, 43,000-sq.ft., 800-seat, 21-restaurant epicurean pageant in the middle of Brasilia's Plano Piloto, designed to give that comma-like inte4rval to your day. It is a far more organized operation than the typical mess of community seating and standing around found at the markets its developers say that inspired it, but that is not to say that you will find the long lines, large crowds, and long waits inviting. It is the sort of Catch-22 that attracts more people and at the same time serves to repel others. For those with wanting more immediate rewards, there are displays with ready empanadas, pastries, sandwiches and more. It is the realization of projects that were designed during the pandemic by the dynamic and innovative entrepreneurial Grupo R2, itself reinvented from its former iteration as R2 Productions, into what it says is a new moment to impact developing segments of entertainment from grand shows to this type of marketplace platform that offers new and distinct kinds of experiences to the public. “It is meant to be dynamic, varied, without strings,” says its parent group, R2, in its YouTube ‘manifesto.’ “A market with the experience of an event, perennial and plural.” It is a sort of immersive love letter to the local community, a place for memorable experiences with plenty of food and drink experiences. “Mané is a unique mixture that will include the traditional restaurants of its “Brasilian roots” next to premium brands recognized by the most demanding clients,” it says. Following Sustainable Development Goals set out by the UN global Agenda Toward a Better World, the Mané Virgula Market promises a wide structure and services for people with disabilities -- ramps, menus in Braille, lower service counters, and the like. The operation aims to showcase small local producers and to bring them closer to the public, highlighting the origin and value of items produced in the Cerrado. Part beer hall, part wine bar, part multi-options eatery, all a feast for Brasilians’ eyes, stomachs, and minds, the self-described “pause” (comma) market promises a two-story children’s playground, a store of “beautiful things,” and it welcomes visitors with a wall-length wine cellar. The name of the project itself is a blend that incorporates the name of the stadium and the symbolism of having a comma, virgula, to break the daily race, Mané Mercado Virgula. “We need breaks from the busy day and the comma symbolizes that for us. Being a comma market is, above all, giving up the period,” said R2 partner in charge of the project Bruno Sartório, famed Brasilia producer, entrepreneur and winner of the 2021 Brasilia Prize, Prêmio Brasília: o novo Olhar do Turismo. It is one of the few stores that specialize in servicing and repairing photographic equipment in the capital; the owner Pedro can also look after your monoculars and even telescopes. Despite Canon still selling photographic equipment here in Brazil, all the service facilities are in São Paulo. Nikon announced in 2017 that they will stop selling all their photographic equipment and closed its service facilities in Brazil in 2017. That meant that if your Nikon photographic equipment needed to be serviced or repaired, you had to wait until you return overseas or send it to the service center in the US. Not anymore now that you know about Itamarati Assistência Técnica right here in the Distrito Federal. With over 40 years’ experience in repairing everything optical, Pedro, a friendly and knowledgeable man, is by far the most qualified person in Brasilia to look after your expensive photographic equipment, cameras, flashes, scopes, binoculars and more... Located in Trecho 7, Feira do SIA do Distrito Federal in Guara, finding the store can be a bit tricky as it is hidden away behind Feira do Paraguai in SIA. When I was brand-new to Brasilia I did a group tour of Brasilia. This is a really great tour - you'll learn not only the layout of the city and the history of why it's been done that way, but also get to see all the big monuments and best architecture. I would really recommend this tour if you have family or friends visiting. You'll learn so much about the city, and your guests will feel like they actually know the city. I recommend this product. It also has a large food court with many options for different tastes and budgets. In addition to shopping and dining, Brasilia Shopping also has branches from Banco do Brazil and Caixa, a foreign exchange bureau, a kids' play area, and a theatre for cultural events and performances. Above the shopping mall, there are many medical practices, law firms and other offices located in the two towers. Ermida Dom Bosco Ecological Park Document Document Document Document In Brasilia Free Tuesday to Sunday Swimming, Restrooms < Search All Button “Ermida” means a place where a hermit lives. You won´t find one in this lovely park, but you will find a small chapel dedicated to the Italian priest and saint Giovanni Bosco, also called Dom Bosco. (There is another large, beautiful church dedicated to Dom Bosco, which is well worth visiting for its magnificent blue stained glass windows, at SEPS Quadra 702 - Asa Sul, Brasilia). The chapel and the statue of the saint inside are meant to remember Dom Bosco´s prophetic dream in 1883 of a future city, more or less at a the location where today is Brasilia. “Between 15 and 20 degrees of [southern] latitude there was a very wide and very long bosom [Italian: seno] which started from a point where a lake was formed. Then a voice said repeatedly: When the mines hidden in the middle of these mountains are excavated, there will appear a great civilization, the promised land where milk and honey flow. There will be inconceivable wealth.” The chapel designed by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer was inaugurated in 1957, at the beginning of construction of Brasilia, ans is the first brick-and-mortar building of Brasília. The Park that surrounds the Ermida is not large (131 hectare), but it is one of the loveliest places to view Brasília, the Paranoá lake and the typical Cerrado vegetation. You have an excellent view of the Esplanade of the Ministries, of the park around the presidential palace of the Brazilian presidents (Palácico da Alvorada) just across the lake, and of the Lago Norte peninsula. Apart from the original chapel with the Dom Bosco statue, there is another, larger chapel with the Niemeyer´s characteristic architecture, an amphitheater, a long road-ramp to practice downhill skate- boarding, a small snack bar, and a wooden pier. There is also the “Casa da Cerradania” (no translation available), which is a space for environmental education activities and for photo and art exhibitions. The entire infrastructure of the park has recently been refurbished. You can relax on the lake shore or on the pier, have a picknick, take a swim in the lake, or walk or ride a bike on the roads and trails that cross the park. You can study the diverse flora of the Cerrado, with many plants in flower at any time of the year. It is also a great vantage point to observe the fabulous Brasilia sunsets. Cris, the instructor, is a physical therapist and takes amazing care. The studio is in the Centro Hípico Lago Sul in Jardim Botânico it a beautiful space, far away from traffic and noise. AND the massage therapist Luciana is also excellent. I am not sure of their English abilities but know they have had many foreign clients. It opened in 1957, during the construction of Brasilia and covers nearly 140 hectares. It is located near the neighborhood of Candangolândia at the end of Asa Sul. The Zoo is open from Thursday to Sunday between 8:30 and 17:00 and the admission is $5 reais during the week and $10 reais on weekends. Currently the Zoo has over 800 animals and 185 different animal species and it a favorite place for children. The Zoo also hosts the Museu de Ciencias Naturais (Natural Sciences Museum), where visitors can take tours and learn about the different Brazilian biomes. You can also bring your picnic blanket along and go hiking. When I was brand-new to Brasilia I did a group tour of Brasilia. This is a really great tour - you'll learn not only the layout of the city and the history of why it's been done that way, but also get to see all the big monuments and best architecture. I would really recommend this tour if you have family or friends visiting. You'll learn so much about the city, and your guests will feel like they actually know the city. I recommend this product.
