Sara has been teaching my two girls (13 and 14) for the past two years. Sara is a native French speaker who has a master's in teaching French as a foreign language (with a specialisation in teaching children). My girls had to learn enough French in 6 months to enter a new school where French would be their second language. Sara worked with the girls for 6 months and gave them a solid base, which made them feel confident when they arrived at the new school. After we moved to Brussels, the girls had the opportunity to change to a local teacher, but they asked to keep their online classes with Sara, which shows how she can easily create a connection with her students. In our case, she understands our girls' needs and likes. Classes have different themes and are focused on conversation, while also highlighting grammar and new vocabulary. She can combine different elements and activities according to each student's preferences and needs. Her private tutoring has been on point at helping our girls to do well in French subjects in school and to be able to communicate with other students at school. We worked with other French teachers before (a private teacher and schoolteachers), but Sara has been far more efficient at delivering content, in my experience. She has an accessible and flexible approach to teaching, which I believe would suit a range of different student profiles. Besides French, she also speaks English and Portuguese. This is a really great tour - you'll learn not only the layout of the city and the history of why it's been done that way, but also get to see all the big monuments and best architecture. I would really recommend this tour if you have family or friends visiting. You'll learn so much about the city, and your guests will feel like they actually know the city. I recommend this product. We left Brasilia last July, but our last family member - our cat - had to stay back and await transport routes and medical processes and a few covid related delays. He is finally back with us and on his way to his new home in England. I just wanted to say that we had a very good experience using Transcontrol for pet transportation services. Flying a cat into the UK was very complex and they helped us work out all our best options. Their fees were reasonable (it’s all very expensive, but most of the cost comes from the airline not the pet transportation service). For us it worked out best to fly our cat to Brussels. And we drove from the UK to collect him. Bare in mind that local airports may impose additional fees which will be payable upon collection of your pet. For example, we paid €170 at Brussels airport to release our cat from the handlers. If anyone needs any advice, or tips, do not hesitate to message me (I will depart the group now). This is a surprise as “the winning architect Lúcio Costa declared that the new city must be orderly and efficient, but also a city of vitality and charm, conducive to reverie and intellectual speculation, capable of becoming not only the seat of Government, the administrative headquarters of the nation, but also a center of culture which will attract to it the finest and most perceptive intellects in the country.” Unfortunately, the museums never quite materialized the way Costa hoped. One of the few museums that is worth visiting is the Banco Central Museum in the heart of Brasilia. The museum has two parts. One that is dealing with the history of the monetary development, consistent of banknotes and coins from Brazil and around the world, medals, how money is made as well as how financial transaction were performed in the old world. The other part is an art collection with over 550 exhibits, ranging from paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures from mainly Brazilian artists. Another cool exhibit in the museum is about gold, where you can find everything from gold nuggets and bars to the largest gold nugget so far found in Brazil, weighing 60.8 kg. Entry to the museum is free and you only must present an identification with a photo. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. When you drive past it you are forgiven to think it is just an old run-down shack in the middle of nowhere at the side of the dam. But how wrong you are. The restaurant was built in 1956 to feed the workers that build the dam. It is said that at its heydays it fed over 5000 workers daily and that President Juscelino Kubitschek visited the worksite every week to check on the progress of the dam. In and outside of the restaurant you can see many pictures showing the building of the dam and how it was in the old times. And the current owner Fábio Martins Santos, who is the son of the founder, will happily talk to you about the history of the place and dig out more photos for you. The menu of Churrascaria Paranoá lists over 50 different dishes, including lamb, free-range chicken and exotic dishes with frogs and alligator meat. But what they are famous for is their grilled picanha. And what a treat that is; it melts in your mouth. The prices are extremely good and there is plenty of room for children to play on the original playground from over 65 years ago. And if you go on weekends in the evening, you can see one of the great sunsets in Brasilia. All in all one of the best hidden secret restaurants in Brasilia. You will not be disappointed. When I was brand-new to Brasilia I did a group tour of Brasilia. This is a really great tour - you'll learn not only the layout of the city and the history of why it's been done that way, but also get to see all the big monuments and best architecture. I would really recommend this tour if you have family or friends visiting. You'll learn so much about the city, and your guests will feel like they actually know the city. I recommend this product. As it turns out, there is more than one Vasto in Brasilia. But I am here to tell you that there is one that offers a superior experience, the location at SHCS Quadra108 Bloco E on Asa Sul. From the moment you walk in you are in a New York kind of mood. Sinatra songs, often live, set the ambiance; the layout and design itself place you in the Big Apple, in one of those restaurants on an upper floor with a great view, the ones Vegas lounges try so hard to duplicate. Before you even look at the menu, the place has won you over. Service is immediate and impeccable, more so during lunch than at dinner when the service is slower, clumsier, and the food quality can be inconsistent. It is casual-elegant, businesslike or romantic, take your pick. It is the kind of place where you can spend an hour or two listening to music and sipping a drink before you even think of food. People go there to eat, however, and the menu is a delightful offering of escalating choices. There is a light avocado on toast appetizer served beautifully garnished with a green-leaf salad with feta, split grape tomatoes, and pomegranates, altogether they are a feast to the eyes as much as your taste. And you can go to the other side of the spectrum with the sumptuous Mexilhões à Provençal —Mussels à la Provençal— for a spectacularly presented and delectable appetizer that can more than satisfy you in both flavor and quantity. Presentation is, in fact, a Vasto trademark. The Roasted Cauliflower —Couve Flor Assada— is spectacular as it arrives, golden with its cheese covering singed to perfection it comes on a light green coulee that complements the flavor deliciously. It is my favorite. The Ovo Mollet appetizer is a whimsical panko-fried soft-boiled egg centered on a delicious gumbo-like stew of mushrooms and crisp bacon. Its full-flavor will make an impression on your flavor receptors, one you will surely want to try on your next visit. One could spend several hundred dollars on dinner and drinks, but for me, the above appetizers were more than enough keeping my bill under R$200. You can indulge on Vasto’s Prime Rib, its Filet Mignon, Ratatouille, Salmon, or the Costela do Dianteiro ribs from the ubiquitous ads, and you can certainly make of your visit a lovely gourmet experience. I was disappointed, however, by their Tiramisu dessert. It was rubbery and had the taste of an item too long in the refrigerator, certainly not fresh - an unfortunate last impression. On a subsequent visit, I tried their Panqueca de Doce de Leite Argentino with somewhat less disappointing results. Vasto Sul is open daily from noon to midnight. It is located about one hour from the center of Brasilia. Fazenda Novo Horizonte was founded in 1988 as a traditional farm which grew soy and corn as well as raised pigs and cows. But that changed around 2003 when the owners fell in love with everything coffee. The corn and soy field gave way to coffee plants and Café Minelis was born. After years of passionate work their coffee won several prestigious prizes in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020. Fazenda Novo Horizonte offers guided tours through the farm, including a presentation about the history of coffee, the long way from planting the bean, harvesting, processing to roasting and the end product. You will also experience the roasting process and that smell is every coffee lover’s dream. Button Brasilia is a city full of apartments, especially in Asa Sul and Asa Norte. To give it inhabitants access to green areas, you will find public parks all over the city, the biggest being the Parque da Cidade Sarah Kubitschek. Parque da Cidade Sarah Kubitschek was officially founded in 1978 and is one of the world’s largest urban parks, and the largest in Latin America. It is a beautiful area of over 420 hectares with lots of room and things to do. The park is officially open from 5:00am to midnight. Close to the TV Tower you can visit the amusement park with heaps of entertainment not only for the kids but also a go-cart course for the more adventurous ones. There is also a large lake with bridges, and you can rent boats to explore the lake. Throughout the park you find separate bicycle and running walking lanes, playgrounds, public BBQ facilities (bring your own charcoal), restaurants, public training equipment as well as plenty of street vendors that sell everything from coconut water, and beer to street food and ice cream. On weekends you will find a lot of special events happening in the park including beer and music festivals, children’s events and even medieval performances. The park is also home to Brasilia’s biggest exhibition hall with over 5100 square meters of space and 4500 car spaces. Unfortunately, the park fell into a bit of disrepair with many of the original features falling apart, like the wave pool that once was a big attraction. One can just hope that will get better. Security Warning While the park is safe during the day, it is not a place to venture in after dark. The vibrant ambiance took in the Friday lunchtime crowd under the giant open space of Mané Mercado Virgula, a striking architectural addition meshed into the grandeur of Brasilia’s Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha and the striking high rises around the city’s Monumental Axis for a commanding view of the whole cityscape. You are in a bustling food hall with a generous number of food choices, a veritable gastronomic Circus Maximus or at least a version of Pontão under one roof. The place is cool and vaguely exciting with a modern energy that is as much Brasilia as a piece of the kind of food markets that took over the streets in New York’s Soho, Barcelona, and countless German and Italian cities. But Mané Virgula Market is much more than that. It is a carefully curated selection of restaurant offerings that range from Argentinian to Arab to Japanese, to churrascos, burgers, roasted birds, Brazilian specialties, pastries, beers, wines, and several culinary offerings that each specialize in various aspects sure to please foodies and dabblers alike. It is a paean to Brasilian cuisine; most of the food kiosks there are restaurants that already exist and have been successful in pleasing the public in Brasilia for years. Commanding a corner of the vast covered area and very busy is Lima, Cocina Peruana by Chef Marco Espinoza of Taypá, one of Brasilia’s best innovative, elegant restaurants. The setting is very simple, plastic chairs and tables under a huge tree which gives is the feeling that you are in a beer garden. The menu is very extensive, and the food portions are huge and, most important, they taste pretty good. And the beers are ice cold. Pricewise, Distribuidora de Bebidas must be one of the cheapest bars in Brasilia, which is always good. The service can be a bit slow at times when the bar is crowded, especially on weekends. The locals are very welcoming and some of them speak English and are more than happy to have a conversation with you. All in all, a great place to spend time with friends and family. Taxis Taxis are pretty expensive here and, if you are a gringo and don’t know your way around, even more so. The trip from the airport to your hotel will take ages and resembles more a city tour. The taxis are generally clean but do not expect the drivers to speak any English. The price of the ride is displayed in front so you can see it. When in the taxi it is important to check the meter. It has 2 rates depending on the time: “Bandeira 1” = the day rate between 6 am and 8 pm. “Bandeira 2” = the night rate between 8 pm and 6 am, which is approximately 20% higher). Never take a ride in a taxi that doesn’t display the price, or the driver says that it doesn’t work. Uber or 99 Uber or 99 (another local ride-share) is the way to go if you do not have your own transportation. They are plentiful, the drivers are very friendly, the cars are clean, and they are cheap. And because you can follow the route on your own phone you can check if they go the most direct way. Many of the Uber drivers speak some English and, if they hear you are a gringo, are eager to speak with you. If they talk to you, just have a chat with them; you will make their day. It is also not uncommon to have gringos driving Ubers as it is a way for them to make money. Therefore, it can be a real pain in the arse to get money transferred, especially large sums. It is difficult to establish a Brazilian bank account unless you are a permanent resident. If you do have a Brazilian bank account here, you can transfer money from your home country directly into that account. That will take a while and the cost can be quite high, depending on your bank’s charges and fees as well what your Brazilian bank will charge. It is also likely that you must attend your bank here in person and proof where the money is from. And attending any bank in person here in Brasilia is a time-consuming affair. The best way to transfer funds into Brazil are money transfer services like Wise, formerly known as Transferwise. You can open an account online, which needs some time, and you have to provide several documents and security checks. But once that is done and you are set up it is all easy breezy. With Wise you can only transfer money from your own bank account overseas into your Brazilian bank account. So if your family and friends want to send you money from their accounts that will not be possible. In that case better use transfer services like Western Union. UPDATE: Wise allows you now to get a bank account with Wise in your home country. This includes a BSB and account number and works just like any bank account. This account can be used for family and friends to deposit money into it and you can than send it to people to anywhere in the world that have also a Wise account. Once you initiate the transfer through Wise you have to transfer the money from your foreign bank account into a Wise account and about 2 days later it will land in your Brazilian account. Please note that you will not have a problem transferring US $10.000 a year from your overseas account to Brazil. Once you go over US $10.000 Wise might ask you for some more information. Although not as well-known as Samba outside of Brazil, locally, forró is probably the most practiced dance style within the country. You might have seen people dancing forró at the yearly festas junina and julina. Still, there are plenty of other opportunities to dance at churrascos, weddings, and, of course, the many forró parties in and around Brasília. Forró is an intimate and subtle couples' dance (at least for a clunky European like me). It cuts through social classes and is one of the best ways to meet ""real"" Brazilians. I started classes three months ago at Lá Na Dança, and it's been a fantastic cultural experience. Victinho and Pámela, the couple teaching the beginner's class, are excellent teachers. It's daunting to learn a new dance from scratch (I've never danced and can't keep a beat to save my life), but miraculously, I'm getting the hang of it! Victinho explains the rhythm and teaches you to hear the instruments, giving you a tool to find the dance's beat and structure (engineer-types will appreciate this!). You can dance with a fixed partner, but I go alone. The school matches me with somebody at my level or assigns one of the assistants. They are great at making this a fun and ""non-awkward"" experience. By this pace, I believe I'll be dancing confidently in a couple of months. If a small group of foreigners wants to join, Victinho is also very open to accommodating whatever language needs there might be." When I was brand-new to Brasilia I did a group tour of Brasilia. This is a really great tour - you'll learn not only the layout of the city and the history of why it's been done that way, but also get to see all the big monuments and best architecture. I would really recommend this tour if you have family or friends visiting. You'll learn so much about the city, and your guests will feel like they actually know the city. I recommend this product. Parque Nacional de Brasília Document Document Document Document In Brasilia $$ By Appointment Small Groups, Weekend Trips < Search All Button Established in 1961, Parque Nacional de Brasília is one of the biggest parks in Brasilia, but most of it is off limits for the general public. The main entrance is close to the industrial zone in Asa Norte. This park offers hiking and walking trails as well as mountain bike trails. It is most famous for its two natural-spring swimming pools. One is man-made and is huge, the other one is a natural one which is not as big, but very popular, especially during the hot season. In the park there is also the Santa Maria Dam, supplying about 30% of fresh water to Brasilia. You can access the park with a car or bicycle and the entrance fee is $28 reais for foreigners that do not reside in Brazil (proof of residence is required). Foreigners residing in Brazil and Brazilians have to pay $14 reais. If you visit the natural swimming spot you will see many monkeys in the trees and surroundings. While you think they are cute, they can be a real pest as they are thieving little creatures. So watch your belongings and never leave them alone. There must be countless bags, including mobile phones and car keys, spread over a wide area or in trees. When I question them at the end of the session, they always have a strong understanding of the mathematics or physics concepts that they're studying and have the confidence to proudly explain these to me.
