They also stock overseas brands like Stoelze, Bauscher, Bonna, Zieher, WMF to name a few. This is the shop where the better restaurants and bars are buying their equipment for the table settings as well as the kitchen. And at the back of the store, you can find many items that are reduced in price because they are overstocked, or the items are no longer in the current catalog. The prices of many of their items are much cheaper than in the household stores you find in the Asa Sul or Asa Norte and while it is a bit of a drive if you live in Lago Sul or Lago Norte, you will not be disappointed and save some money. This is a really great tour - you'll learn not only the layout of the city and the history of why it's been done that way, but also get to see all the big monuments and best architecture. I would really recommend this tour if you have family or friends visiting. You'll learn so much about the city, and your guests will feel like they actually know the city. I recommend this product. The menu offers a lot of food and drinks options, and the quality is consistently very good. The portions are huge and can feed several people. And most importantly the beer is served ice cold. They have a kilogram buffet during lunchtime which is priced reasonable. Fausto & Manoel has a large variety of tasty cocktails and spirits. Great place to go with friends and family for lunch or dinner. And if you go to the Pontão location you can have a table right by the lake with a fantastic view. Gets very busy on weekends and public holidays, so you might want to reserve a table. Menos lixo... Your credit/debit card transaction may have just cost you a lot more than you thought —R$90, R$990, or more; a friend was scammed for nearly R$5000 in SP. Here's how. The person brings the machine to your face showing the amount you owe, all you need to do is to enter your number and be quickly on your way. Sometimes the tiny screen may show a zero to the left, but you do not worry because, after all, a zero to the left adds nothing to the total. But what you don't know is that it is a common new scam that has taken in a few friends... especially targeting foreigners. Unscrupulous scammers, among them taxi drivers and others will add a 9; 99; or 990 ahead of the number and add spaces at the end so the screen only shows the amount you expect to pay (at least once I noticed a discrepancy, thinking nothing of it). You enter your PIN, politely thank the attendant, and drive/walk away none the wiser. Without that little piece of paper, you would just throw away to look at, you have no idea you have just been taken. Such a nice attendant. Solution: Always yes "Sim" when asked "Você quer a sua via?" This act in itself reduces the likelihood of an altered amount. Of course, always look to compare once the transaction is done. General Information about Hardware & DIY Stores Document Document Document Document Brasilia-wide Free Not Applicable Building Supplies, Garden Supplies < Search All Button Small & big hardware stores You will find little hardware stores in nearly every commercial quadra and while they look rather small, do not be fooled – they have a lot to offer. In most of the stores you can buy anything like electrical supplies, gardening tools, electrical tools, plumbing supplies, and voltage transformers to name a few things. You can also purchase nails, screws, washers, etc by weight. To find an English-speaking person in these shops is rather unlikely, but the staff is mostly very friendly and helpful. There are also two big LeyRoy Merlin stores in Brasilia; one in Asa Sul and one in Asa Sul. They are French owned and have a huge selection on hardware, tiles, garden supplies, plants, kitchen stuff, etc. It is a really great place, but also extremely expensive. One has to pay for convenience. One noticeable thing about LeyRoy Merlin is that most of the time you find more staff than customers in the stores. So our recommendation is to buy from the smaller stores as they are much cheaper and you help a small business. Compare prices in and around Brasilia Brasilia is expensive. Full stop. Really expensive. And if you are a gringo, you most likely will get hit with a gringo tax on top. Not only for hardware but for everything else as well. The rule is, that if you buy stuff just outside of Brasilia it is about 30% cheaper. So if you have a big renovation or garden project it would be advisable to shop around outside Brasilia. Most hardware stores in the surroundings also have free delivery, but better check that out with the store. The menu is very extensive, and the food portions are huge and, most important, they taste pretty good. And the beers are ice cold. Pricewise, Distribuidora de Bebidas must be one of the cheapest bars in Brasilia, which is always good. The service can be a bit slow at times when the bar is crowded, especially on weekends. The locals are very welcoming and some of them speak English and are more than happy to have a conversation with you. All in all, a great place to spend time with friends and family. They offer cars from manufacturers like VW, Jeep, BMW, Audi, Fiat, Hyundai to name a few, and they offer rental contracts for 12, 18, 24, 36 and 48 months. All vehicles are brand new when delivered and the monthly fee includes all maintenance, insurance, and yearly registration fees. Customers can choose from more than 70 models and the color of the vehicle. Delivery can take up to 60 days, but Unidas Livre will supply a rental car during the waiting period for the same monthly price that the long-term rental costs. Taxis Taxis are pretty expensive here and, if you are a gringo and don’t know your way around, even more so. The trip from the airport to your hotel will take ages and resembles more a city tour. The taxis are generally clean but do not expect the drivers to speak any English. The price of the ride is displayed in front so you can see it. When in the taxi it is important to check the meter. It has 2 rates depending on the time: “Bandeira 1” = the day rate between 6 am and 8 pm. “Bandeira 2” = the night rate between 8 pm and 6 am, which is approximately 20% higher). Never take a ride in a taxi that doesn’t display the price, or the driver says that it doesn’t work. Uber or 99 Uber or 99 (another local ride-share) is the way to go if you do not have your own transportation. They are plentiful, the drivers are very friendly, the cars are clean, and they are cheap. And because you can follow the route on your own phone you can check if they go the most direct way. Many of the Uber drivers speak some English and, if they hear you are a gringo, are eager to speak with you. If they talk to you, just have a chat with them; you will make their day. It is also not uncommon to have gringos driving Ubers as it is a way for them to make money. Money Transfer to Brazil Document Document Document Document Online Not Applicable English International Money Transfer < Search All Button Brazil has a huge problem with corruption so transferring money from and to Brazil is closely monitored by the authorities. Therefore, it can be a real pain in the arse to get money transferred, especially large sums. It is difficult to establish a Brazilian bank account unless you are a permanent resident. If you do have a Brazilian bank account here, you can transfer money from your home country directly into that account. That will take a while and the cost can be quite high, depending on your bank’s charges and fees as well what your Brazilian bank will charge. It is also likely that you must attend your bank here in person and proof where the money is from. And attending any bank in person here in Brasilia is a time-consuming affair. The best way to transfer funds into Brazil are money transfer services like Wise, formerly known as Transferwise. You can open an account online, which needs some time, and you have to provide several documents and security checks. But once that is done and you are set up it is all easy breezy. With Wise you can only transfer money from your own bank account overseas into your Brazilian bank account. So if your family and friends want to send you money from their accounts that will not be possible. In that case better use transfer services like Western Union. UPDATE: Wise allows you now to get a bank account with Wise in your home country. This includes a BSB and account number and works just like any bank account. This account can be used for family and friends to deposit money into it and you can than send it to people to anywhere in the world that have also a Wise account. Once you initiate the transfer through Wise you have to transfer the money from your foreign bank account into a Wise account and about 2 days later it will land in your Brazilian account. Please note that you will not have a problem transferring US $10.000 a year from your overseas account to Brazil. Once you go over US $10.000 Wise might ask you for some more information. Although not as well-known as Samba outside of Brazil, locally, forró is probably the most practiced dance style within the country. You might have seen people dancing forró at the yearly festas junina and julina. Still, there are plenty of other opportunities to dance at churrascos, weddings, and, of course, the many forró parties in and around Brasília. Forró is an intimate and subtle couples' dance (at least for a clunky European like me). It cuts through social classes and is one of the best ways to meet ""real"" Brazilians. I started classes three months ago at Lá Na Dança, and it's been a fantastic cultural experience. Victinho and Pámela, the couple teaching the beginner's class, are excellent teachers. It's daunting to learn a new dance from scratch (I've never danced and can't keep a beat to save my life), but miraculously, I'm getting the hang of it! Victinho explains the rhythm and teaches you to hear the instruments, giving you a tool to find the dance's beat and structure (engineer-types will appreciate this!). You can dance with a fixed partner, but I go alone. The school matches me with somebody at my level or assigns one of the assistants. They are great at making this a fun and ""non-awkward"" experience. By this pace, I believe I'll be dancing confidently in a couple of months. If a small group of foreigners wants to join, Victinho is also very open to accommodating whatever language needs there might be." The main entrance is close to the industrial zone in Asa Norte. This park offers hiking and walking trails as well as mountain bike trails. It is most famous for its two natural-spring swimming pools. One is man-made and is huge, the other one is a natural one which is not as big, but very popular, especially during the hot season. In the park there is also the Santa Maria Dam, supplying about 30% of fresh water to Brasilia. You can access the park with a car or bicycle and the entrance fee is $28 reais for foreigners that do not reside in Brazil (proof of residence is required). Foreigners residing in Brazil and Brazilians have to pay $14 reais. If you visit the natural swimming spot you will see many monkeys in the trees and surroundings. While you think they are cute, they can be a real pest as they are thieving little creatures. So watch your belongings and never leave them alone. There must be countless bags, including mobile phones and car keys, spread over a wide area or in trees. Located on the 16th floor of the B Hotel in the hotel sector in Asa Norte, it offers a fantastic view over parts of the Eixo Monumental, Torre de TV and the Estádio Mané Garrincha. The rooftop area is open for all the hotel guests during the day and has a yellow pool flanked by a trendy feature wall. From 17:00 the rooftop bar is open to the public, but we recommend that you make a booking as the space is limited, and it is an extremely popular place for expats and Brazilians alike. Pricewise it is a bit costly and don’t expect great food and several people told us that the service is a bit lacking. So go there to experience a great Brasilia sunset, not a culinary experience. The golf course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Senior, one of the greatest golf course designers in the world. Located near the JK bridge on Lake Paranoá, the course features 18 holes with a par 72. The Green Fee is R$250 during the week and R$400 on weekends and public holidays. In addition, you must hire a caddy per group which has to be paid directly. You can also hire a golf cart or electrical scooter. The golf club offers lessons for beginners as well as experienced players. On the golf course you also have a great restaurant called Almeria, overlooking hole 18. The restaurant can be accessed by the general public as well. For over a year she has not only taught our kids how to ride but helped them develop a safe and kind relationship with the horse and its environment. Her lessons are a great combination of riding basics and nature walks. She can teach in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. Additional information from Maju, the horse ridding instructor: Horse riding lessons at Brasília Country Club with us are a fun learning experience for all ages. The classes are individual, while using one of our rental horses. Starting at age 3, but not limited to only kids, here unexperienced riders can learn about horse riding, horse behavior, riding tack, horse grooming, and learn how to deal with such wonderful animals. The classes last for about 40 minutes long, and what's taught is the base of horse riding. You'll learn how to control a horse and take it wherever you'd like, different gaits such as walk, trot and canter, how to keep your balance on horseback, and how to trust horse riding. If you wish to, you can also be taught show jumping and/or basic dressage. If trails are more to your liking, Brasília Country Club also has wonderful trails within preserved areas of nature you can explore on horseback. Our main goal is to teach you how to deal with horses and to enjoy the experience of being around them. We own two horses that are available for rental (individual or shared). One of them is a very gentle appendix quarter horse perfect for children and beginners, Pepito. He's very patient and perfect for calm classes. The other horse is an experienced Argentinian saddle bred stallion who needs a more experienced rider who'd be up for a challenge. He's good for showjumping and dressage competitions. The costs for the classes include the maintenance of the horse, which will be split among how many families rents one single horse. Renting the horse means they're available for riding at any time you'd like within the open hours of the stables. The stables are open from Tuesday to Friday from 8am to 5pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 12pm. When I was brand-new to Brasilia I did a group tour of Brasilia. This is a really great tour - you'll learn not only the layout of the city and the history of why it's been done that way, but also get to see all the big monuments and best architecture. I would really recommend this tour if you have family or friends visiting. You'll learn so much about the city, and your guests will feel like they actually know the city. I recommend this product. I found Multidrone in Asa Norte, and to my surprise, they are an official service center for DJI. I went there on a Saturday and spoke with the owner Everton, who speaks perfect English, about my problem with my drone (one of the arms was snapped off) and he assured me that they can fix it. And after one week I was able to pick it up. Not only did they replace the arm, but they calibrated the complete drone to perfection. Besides servicing drones, Multidrones will give you advice about purchasing and trading drones, technical support and if you need some filming or inspections done with drones, they can organize this as well. All in all, super happy and highly recommended. And if you expect an old dingy bowling alley you will be disappointed. Striker Pier 21 is more than just bowling; besides the state of the art 16 bowling lanes, it also has a restaurant that offers American inspired dining, and the bar is pretty cool as well. There is also a video game room where you can play games such as racing simulators and guitar hero The décor of the place is inspired by bowling alleys in New York, and it has a rustic and relaxing feeling. Accessing the Lake Shores in Lago Norte Document Document Document Document Lago Norte Free Not Applicable Running Tracks, Swimming < Search All Button When Brasilia was planned and built, one of the features was that every Brazilian has full access to the shores of the lake. When the areas in Lago Norte and Lago Sul were developed, most of the owners conveniently forgot about this and claimed the public land as their own and built right up to the lake and fenced it off. For years, this illegal building went unnoticed and so the owners became more brazen and built swimming pools, tennis courts, jetties and even small football fields. A couple of years ago the authorities stepped in and reclaimed the land, tore the fences down and gave back the access to the public. The result is that in Lago Norte you can access the lake on several points and walk all around it, with a few exceptions like the Rede Sarah de Hospitais, which is still closed for public access. The special thing about this is that you can wonder through the former backyards of the superrich. You will discover filled in swimming pools, ruins of tennis courts and jetties. Some owners tore everything down and left the area to neglect; others still maintain it to a certain point. And you can look right into the remaining backyards of huge houses. Some were even abandoned by the owners and are rotting away. These are some great areas to have a picnic and a swim. Just be aware of the ticks that might find you at the shore (see “Problem with Ticks in Brasilia” in the General Information category). Another problem can be, especially on weekends, the noise pollution from the other picnickers around you. But if you find a good spot it is a treat. And it is free. If you have other ideas, please add them! 1. Parque da Cidade. I like the trails here because they're nowhere near roads - I can run without having to stop for cars, and I don't have to worry about getting hit by a bicycle. Also, we can make a family outing out of it. While I'm running, my husband can be watching my son playing on the playground. 2. Eixao do Lazer. On Sundays, the Eixao is closed to traffic. Sometimes we ride bikes, and sometimes we just jog. Often we stop at one of the bouncy castles for our son to play for a while, or we get Dunkin' Donuts and a coffee afterward. 3. Parque Olhos d'Agua. Like Parque da Cidade, Olhos d'Agua is a great because there are no bikes or traffic to worry about there in the park, there are playgrounds for the kids, and it's very clean (no pets allowed inside). After your run you can grab a coconut water from the front gate to replenish your electrolytes, or stop by La Boutique (the French bakery) and undo all of your good work by eating croissants.
