The menu offers a lot of food and drinks options, and the quality is consistently very good. The portions are huge and can feed several people. And most importantly the beer is served ice cold. They have a kilogram buffet during lunchtime which is priced reasonable. Fausto & Manoel has a large variety of tasty cocktails and spirits. Great place to go with friends and family for lunch or dinner. And if you go to the Pontão location you can have a table right by the lake with a fantastic view. Gets very busy on weekends and public holidays, so you might want to reserve a table. Ermida Dom Bosco Ecological Park Document Document Document Document In Brasilia Free Tuesday to Sunday Swimming, Restrooms < Search All Button “Ermida” means a place where a hermit lives. You won´t find one in this lovely park, but you will find a small chapel dedicated to the Italian priest and saint Giovanni Bosco, also called Dom Bosco. (There is another large, beautiful church dedicated to Dom Bosco, which is well worth visiting for its magnificent blue stained glass windows, at SEPS Quadra 702 - Asa Sul, Brasilia). The chapel and the statue of the saint inside are meant to remember Dom Bosco´s prophetic dream in 1883 of a future city, more or less at a the location where today is Brasilia. “Between 15 and 20 degrees of [southern] latitude there was a very wide and very long bosom [Italian: seno] which started from a point where a lake was formed. Then a voice said repeatedly: When the mines hidden in the middle of these mountains are excavated, there will appear a great civilization, the promised land where milk and honey flow. There will be inconceivable wealth.” The chapel designed by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer was inaugurated in 1957, at the beginning of construction of Brasilia, ans is the first brick-and-mortar building of Brasília. The Park that surrounds the Ermida is not large (131 hectare), but it is one of the loveliest places to view Brasília, the Paranoá lake and the typical Cerrado vegetation. You have an excellent view of the Esplanade of the Ministries, of the park around the presidential palace of the Brazilian presidents (Palácico da Alvorada) just across the lake, and of the Lago Norte peninsula. Apart from the original chapel with the Dom Bosco statue, there is another, larger chapel with the Niemeyer´s characteristic architecture, an amphitheater, a long road-ramp to practice downhill skate- boarding, a small snack bar, and a wooden pier. There is also the “Casa da Cerradania” (no translation available), which is a space for environmental education activities and for photo and art exhibitions. The entire infrastructure of the park has recently been refurbished. You can relax on the lake shore or on the pier, have a picknick, take a swim in the lake, or walk or ride a bike on the roads and trails that cross the park. You can study the diverse flora of the Cerrado, with many plants in flower at any time of the year. It is also a great vantage point to observe the fabulous Brasilia sunsets. To say he is a car nut is an understatement. He is servicing and repairing my imported Hyundai Tucson BJ 2006 4WD Diesel since I arrived here 6 years ago, and he is doing a tremendous job. Since the car is imported it is sometimes difficult to find the right parts. And many car owners that have imported cars can tell you long stories about finding parts here in Brazil. Figueredo is a detective in finding the right replacement parts and if he does not find them here in Brazil, he has contacts in Argentina that will find it for him and arrange it to be shipped to Brasilia. And he will not rest until your car is running 100%. Besides repair jobs they are also providing normal services and diagnostic checks. Their work is first class and the prices very reasonable. Besides me I know several other expats that go there for normal services and repair jobs so I highly recommend Clinica do Carro." When I was brand-new to Brasilia I did a group tour of Brasilia. This is a really great tour - you'll learn not only the layout of the city and the history of why it's been done that way, but also get to see all the big monuments and best architecture. I would really recommend this tour if you have family or friends visiting. You'll learn so much about the city, and your guests will feel like they actually know the city. I recommend this product. It is a small cosy place with outside seating and the waiter is arguably one of the best in Brasilia. On their menu they not only have the traditional German fool like sausages, potato salad, Sauerkraut and fried potatoes with onions, but also a great pork knuckle. You can also buy a bottle of Whisky and leave it there. They put your name on it and you can consume it whenever you go there. A favorite hangout for the Brasilia Hash House Harriers. Associação Brasiliense de Aeromodelismo (ABRA) Document Document Document Document Asa Sul Free 7 Days a Week Portuguese Model Planes, Cars & Drones Park < Search All Button Tucked away at the beginning of Asa Sul, the Brasilia Model Airplane Association, Associação Brasiliense de Aeromodelismo (ABRA), operates a 50,000 square meter modeling park, including a runway for model planes, a model car racetrack and a model helicopter and drone field. Founded in 1979 ABRA is the biggest model club in Brasilia and the area is open from 7:00 to 19:00, 7 days a week. But most of the action you see on the weekends with dozens of airplanes starting and landing, drones zipping overhead and the noise of the model petrol cars racing on the racetrack. Entry is free to either participate or just coming along to watch the action. The model airplane runway staging area is covered so you are protected from the weather. And the racetrack has a nice viewing area. On weekends some food trucks will be at the park and if you have your own model plane, car helicopter or drone, the Brazilians will welcome you with open arm. Espaço Aroeira Document Document Document Document Lago Norte Free Monday to Saturday Portuguese, English, French Restaurants/Coffee Shops < Search All Button You would be forgiven for not knowing about one of the most charming places in Brasilia— Espaço Aroeira, as you come into the Setor de Habitações Individuais Norte, SHIN, plant nurseries to your right, at the beginning of Lago Norte. In fact, I have been going to the plants stores nearly every two months for at least 5 years and did not know it was there. Espaço Aroeira is located at the back of all the nursery stores. I set foot in it for the first time recently, and wow. At the entry to this little oasis is by the outdoor seating from Café Auoreira. It is a beautiful little café that has a limited menu, but what they serve is excellent and very inexpensive. In their outdoor seating area, you are surrounded by beautiful plants and a little pond (with a warning sign that you might get an electrical shock if you enter the pond). About 30 meters from the entry, there is a charming little alley with several colorful shops selling everything from artisan bread, organic cosmetic products, fashions, arts, crafts, and house decorations. The owner of the bakery Revoluções Pães Artesanais, is happy to speak in French or English to you; he makes his products in a woodfired oven that gives his bread a rustic taste. A bit further down the alley there are several big, covered spaces that are used for things like yoga sessions, arts and crafts courses, and other activities. One of the more unique workshops is offered by Together Cafés Especiais where you learn the art of roasting and preparing coffee. At the end of the alley, delightfully camouflaged by the trees and the plants is the restaurant Cozinhas da Terra. Surrounded by huge trees and a wall of green plants is a big outdoor seating area that a German biergarten. The cuisine is Brazilian, and they serve dishes from all corners of the country. It looks delicious and it is rather affordable, but make sure you make a booking as this place is quite popular. In all, it is a wonderful place to visit, a place where you can get lost in nature and the setting and the shops and the food, and easily make an afternoon of it. TIP: When leaving the nursery area to go back to Brasilia by car, DO NOT get on the main street. If you do, you have a long way to get back into Brasilia. Instead use the dirt road right at the end of the nurseries and follow it until you hit the sealed road that gets you back into Brasilia. The student population is approximately 60% Brazilian, 20% American and 20% other Internationals. Each classroom is balanced as much as possible to have an equal mix between the genders and different nationalities. Main classroom instruction is all in English. Students separate into two groups for Portuguese classes, with native speakers attending Portuguese language and history classes geared towards attaining the Brazilian diploma, while the non-native speakers attend PLL (Portuguese Language Learners) classes. The high school offers Brazilian, International and IB diploma programs for high school students. The typical school day runs from 8:00-3:00 (with a 9:00 start on Wednesdays). For a school of its small size, EAB offers a wide range of both curricular and extracurricular activities. Elementary school students have the option of attending after-school activities from 3:00-4:00, including jujitsu, yoga, ballet, cheerleading, Spanish, etc. Middle- and high-school students can choose from sports such as basketball or the music, arts or theatre programs. The school also plans celebrations for the students for major Brazilian holidays, such as Independence Day and Festa Junina, and coordinates with the U.S. Embassy and the FSP (Family-School Partnership organization - similar to a PTO/PTA) to plan U.S. holidays such as Halloween and Thanksgiving. For American families working at the embassy, the location is very convenient to the embassy as well as to most of the embassy’s housing in both Lago Sul and the Plano Piloto (Asa Norte, Asa Sul and Sudoeste). The U.S. embassy provides a shuttle that can drop the students off either at home or (during non-covid times) at the embassy, where many of the kids play on the embassy playground or do homework until their parents get off work. EAB also offers a pre-school program (K3 and K4). Many of the local students attend EAB K3 through Grade 12, however, many American and International parents choose a different alternative for those two years (waiting until K5 to enroll their children at EAB) since they aren’t typically covered by embassy tuition programs, and the cost is quite expensive compared to local options. Owned and operated by Tonico Lichtsztejn, a French born and now naturalized Brazilian, he is regarded as one of the top chefs in Brasilia. If you expect a restaurant with tablecloths, chandeliers and fancy waiters you will be disappointed, very disappointed. All the cooking is done with a BBQ and a smoker in front of a bar, surrounded by some wooden tables and chairs. So the atmosphere is super casual. But the food is absolutely amazing. Tonico Lichtsztejn is what you would call a BBQ specialist and you can taste why when you eat his food. It is nothing fancy, but what one would describe as honest food. And of course, the beers are served cold, and they also prepare some good cocktails. Best of all, there is no loud music and no TV’s around, so one can have a conversation with his friends without being constantly bombarded by loud noise. A great place to come with friends to spend a great evening with good food and great company. UPDATE: SuperQuadra Bar has now also a restaurant/bar at Mane Mercado Virgula near the football stadium. Pre-pandemic I was doing group workouts - a body-weight circuit group training at my neighbor's apartment once a week and a boxing/circuit group at another friend's house once a week. Both groups were great ways to motivate myself to exercise and make friends. After covid I switched to one-on-one workouts (because of having to schedule around my son's homeschooling), and it has been a sanity-saver for me. Currently I am doing a combination of weightlifting and boxing - the stress relief I get from punching things has benefited our entire family. :) And as a nice side effect, my neighbor stopped me the other day and told me she's going to start boxing because my figure looks so great now! Relocating Dogs & Cats to the UK & EU Document Document Document Document Brazil-wide $$$$ By Appointment Portuguese, English Animal Relocation Information < Search All Button This information was supplied by Rebecca Allen and we publish this here with her permission. “This is aimed at cats and dogs owners: I wanted to bring to attention something I am working through at the moment with my pet cat: vaccinations and blood work to get the green light to take your pet to the UK and EU is TIME CONSUMING. Please ensure you leave enough time (upwards of 5 months!) to ensure your pet will be authorized for travel. They require a blood test taken 30 days after a rabies vaccination (and micro chipping prior to this) and this must come back with enough antibodies to then qualify for the 3 month ‘quarantine’ period before the pet can enter the UK or EU. If there are not enough antibodies you have to wait longer and retest before starting the quarantine. You can have the vaccine and blood test at anytime - better to do it as soon as you arrive/adopt a pet. So long as you keep the vaccine certification up to date, the blood test will never expire, and you will be able to arrange exporting your pet much more simply. I learn the hard way, as due to Covid, I let the rabies vaccine lapse last year and now I am going through the process from scratch. My kitty will have to follow us on to the UK (luckily, we have friends to house him temporarily), but I just wanted to share this information to help anyone in a similar situation or just to highlight to newcomers, that this is something that can be underway from the very start and prevent issues in those final ‘packing up’ months. It is located at the beginning of Lago Norte and home to some of the poshest shops in the city. Here you find shops like Ralph Lauren Polo, Bvlgari, Dolce & Gabbana, Armani, Lacoste and many more. You will also find one of the most modern cinemas in the complex. Beside the many fashion shops, you will also find stores that cater for home decors, furniture, toy stores as well as a very good tea store and OBA Hortifruti, a very good supermarket. The food court is relatively small with only a handful of options, but you find some well known restaurants on the bottom floor like Coco Bambu, Outback Steakhouse and Pobre Juan. One of the pleasant things on Iguatemi Shopping is that it is an expensive place, therefore it is never really busy. In the center of the center there are often activities for children. All in all a shopping center worth while visiting, even if you only want to go window shopping. It is common for people to spend their weekends and free time in these clubs. There are programs for all ages. So the Yacht Club or 'Iate Cube de Brasilia' is definitely the most complete sports club in terms of the variety of activities you can enjoy in this quaint club at the edge of the Paranoá Lake. It is expensive, as you can imagine, but to me it is definitely worth the cost if you use it weekly. It boasts a wonderful combination of sport and cultural activities, where you can play squash in the morning and do a guitar or painting class in the afternoon. There are several bars and two restaurants in the club, one being buffet style and the other one being the famous Ouriço, for a more refined taste. There is a great fully equipped gym with a brand-new bike spinning room, but frankly I have never used it since there is so much else to do in this place. If you ride on the main roads, extreme cautious is advised as not all car drivers are respectful of bike riders. Also watch the many potholes in the road and the bike lanes. Currently Brasilia has over 420 km of designated bike lanes and is planning to extend that to over 1200 km in the coming years. In Lago Sul and Lago Norte there are extensive bike lanes which are safe. In the Jardim Botânico neighborhood bike lanes exist on the main road only and if you want to ride over the Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge, Ponte das Garças and Ponte Presidente Costa e Silva (the three bridges connecting Lago Sul with Asa Sul) there are no specific bike lanes, so one has to be extremely careful. In the Plano Piloto area there are plenty of bike lanes. Parque da Cidade Sarah Kubitschek, or Parque da Cidade, is the main park in Brasilia and located in Asa Sul. This is a place where you find plenty of designated bike lanes which can get very busy on weekends. You will find plenty of off-road bike trails around Brasilia. When riding a bike it is advised that you carry a puncture repair kit with you. Brazilian Healthcare Card - Cartão SUS Document Document Document Document Brasilia-wide Free Monday to Friday Portuguese Medical Information < Search All Button Every Brazilian citizen and permanent resident have the right to free healthcare in the public hospitals and the SUS healthcare units, and to access this service one need a national healthcare card called Cartão SUS. The healthcare card is not only ones ID to access free healthcare but is also allows every public hospital or SUS unit to access your medical history, like where one received what medical treatments, by which medical professional and which medication was subscribed to name a few. With the national identification number on the card, it is possible to access all medical records and history on the ConecteSUS website. PLEASE NOTE THAT ANY MEDICAL TREATMENT OR SUBSCRIPTIONS NOT PERFORMED BY A PUBLIC HOSPITAL OR SUS HEALTHCARE UNIT WILL NOT BE RECORDED IN THIS SYSTEM. There are two ways on how to obtain the Cartão SUS; one is in person at any SUS healthcare unit and the other over the internet. A. How to obtain the Cartão SUS in person All what you need to get the Cartão SUS in person is a Brazilian identity card (RG) and the CPF. In some SUS healthcare units, they sometimes request some proof of residency, such as a water or electricity bill. If one has all the documents, visit the closest SUS health unit and they will issue the card on the spot. B. How to obtain the Cartão SUS over the internet 1. When I was brand-new to Brasilia I did a group tour of Brasilia. This is a really great tour - you'll learn not only the layout of the city and the history of why it's been done that way, but also get to see all the big monuments and best architecture. I would really recommend this tour if you have family or friends visiting. You'll learn so much about the city, and your guests will feel like they actually know the city. I recommend this product. The cave has an entrance through a collapse doline (a circular depression formed by the dissolution of rocks), and it is believed to be around 60 million years old. The location is situated in the municipality of Formosa, near the district of Bezera. It is approximately 117 km from Brasília - DF, including 17 km of dirt road in good condition, and 47 km in total from the city of Formosa. Driving time from Brasilia is approximately 2 hours in good driving conditions. Once inside, visitors can explore the dense forest of endemic vegetation, where giant ferns and an immense hall await them. A striking underground lagoon of blue water, one of the largest accessible underground lakes in Brazil, also features in the cave. The lagoon, 180 meters long, surprises visitors with its beauty, and it is formed by the water table, which doesn't change its colour in the rainy season since it's not reached by it. Visitors are advised to wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes as the cave is rocky and can be slippery, especially during or after rainfall.
